MTAA Report Reveals Urgent Need For Government Action On Skills The Motor Trades Association of Australia (MTAA) is calling on the government to urgently address the skills shortage affecting the automotive repair and services sector, describing the problem as an “escalating crisis”. According to a report compiled by Deloitte Access Economics on behalf of the MTAA, more than 2,000 positions were advertised in 2023, with less than 800 filled. The average industry fill rate stands at 39 per cent, significantly below the 67 per cent threshold set by Jobs and Skills Australia (JSA) to designate an occupation as being in shortage. LHB COACH : : Curve roll and Restrictor Indian Railways Curve Rolls are components located at the two outer corners of the bogie frame. In LHB coaches, there are typically two curve rolls per bogie, totaling four per coach. Specifically, they are positioned at the front of the leading trolley and the back of the trailing trolley. Their primary function is to manage the forces generated during the coach's movement through curves. As the train negotiates a curve, the body tends to lean towards the outer side of the curve due to centrifugal forces. Curve rolls help counteract this tendency by providing support and stability to the coach, minimizing excessive tilting or leaning. Restrictors are complementary components provided in the front and back of the coach body. In LHB coaches, there are typically four restrictors per coach. Restrictors work in tandem with curve rolls to restrict excessive relative rotation between the coach and the bogie. They help maintain the alignment and stability of the coach with respect to the bogie, especially during angular movements such as negotiating steep curves. Curve rolls and restrictors collaborate to ensure the safety and stability of the coach during various operational conditions, particularly on steep curves where the risk of excessive tilting or rotation is higher. To any of my contacts in the Automotive industry the NSW government is on a path to change our trade qualifications and certification. I am not sure we need this. They want to introduce two new qualifications (see below) and I struggle to see how this will work or help us as an industry. Most of us in the industry are already working on electric vehicles and hybrid vehicles and have done safely for over 5 years. I performed my certificate 4 for hybrid and electric vehicles over 6 years ago. The new qualifications are Electric light vehicle Electric heavy vehicle (These above two are new) Depower repower hybrid/electric vehicle (current qual of anyone working on EV hybrid) Internal combustion light vehicle (our current qual for a light vehicle mechanic) Internal combustion heavy Automotive lock smith Tyre fitter So this will require the majority of the trade re skilling to do work we are already doing!!!! Is this not just more red tape??? Furthermore, who in TAFE or in any RTO is going to certify someone like me or my staff???. We have actual real life practical experience, we do this every day. I think the government should get their own house in order. It’s widely known lots of teachers not completing their own real practical experience in the industry, or currency as it is known. Perhaps an audit into teachers qualifications is necessary before asking the unskilled to certify the skilled. I do encourage everyone to give their opinions below. You may agree with me or disagree? Where is the HGV Workshop skill set and manpower heading now and in 5 years time? Having done my time on the spanners, the HGV workshop is a shadow of its former self. Very recently having an MoT fail on handbrake even though it failed the workshop brake test and no remedial action taken and then presented for MoT and the obvious fail. Us the operator taking the hit on the ocrs score. Taking vehicles in for its 8 weekly inspection and then having to wait for over a week for discs and pads to be fitted as the workshop is full. Electrical faults taking 6-8 weeks to get someone to look at it. Unable to contact the workshops by phone or get any meaningful updates. Unable to get MoT dates even if you are trying to book them months in advance and having to move the vehicle miles to another region to get a booking. We are in the process of changing fleet from Iveco to mainly DAF but the very many issues are related to Iveco workshops (full R&M) and even the Senior Management of Iveco sit on their hands and do nothing that is visable, but this seems to be an industry issue and not just isolated to Iveco. Soooooo........ Where are HGV workshops heading? Lack of skills, lack of manpower, lack of interest, to few apprentices and others wanting to enter the industry. Is it time to have those spare vehicles sat waiting like fleets used to have and operators just need to accept the consequences? What needs to be done differently in the industry to attract good calibre of people? Money isn't just the answer or is it just a dying trade?

A question for recruiters, Car dealership employers, EV trainers or manufacturers....... I'm considering furthering my EV training by doing the IMI level 4, it would be a bit of an undertaking on my part as it allows the work on and inside HV components when in an unknown condition, so as part of the qualification there's the need for either written assignment or a taped professional discussion. 😊 As it'd be very unlikely to be something that would bring in a wage increase in my current workplace, do dealers search out such a skillset from recruiting staff? It's quite a niche qualification at the moment and so far I'm finding that unknown condition situations are few and far between...... so, trainers....is there value to is? What does the industry even think about EV repairs with the possibilities of Ev becoming the majority propulsion segment seemingly dwindling by the day. It'd be good to hear some opinions from all sides of the fence as I'm pretty much inside a dealership bubble. So please repost or reply and help a guy out 😊
