There's no other industry like UX writing and technical writing where the people doing it are willing to risk their entire livelihoods to discover new methodologies, tooling and experts along the way.
Job hopping is a survival tactic. As someone who has worked in several different industries and environments, I can attest that it's in everybody's best interests not to disparage writers for job hopping. Here's why:
Some places use Microsoft Word styles and field codes to enforce best practices, other places have tons of overhead and use expensive licensing like MadCap Flare or Azure DevOps and require software developer skills like maintaining CI/CD pipelines, code comments, git, and stylesheets. Other teams in need of technical writers have no style guide, no quality management system, sometimes not even a good file storage system or file naming conventions.
Tech writers not only have to contend with the will-o'-the-wisp of the IT industry, but often during the job hunt process, you have to shop around a variety of titles and responsibilities, as opposed to other writing roles such as marketing copy, which often vary less in my experience than technical writing roles. There are few other titles I can think of that require as much flexibility as technical writer just to attain a bare minimum of stability and income.
Anything involving another language or department usually has the effect of multiplying duties and responsibilities for technical writers, making them into Swiss Army knife-like professionals rather quickly, wearing a haberdashery variety of hats including graphic designer, translator, copywriter, business analyst, QA lead, cloud architect, product owner, docs evangelist, and, most commonly, de facto editor for the entire organization.
UX and technical writers are a rare breed of working class hero and job hopping is but one of their many superpowers and I honestly believe that.
Instead of asking "why haven't you stayed anywhere more than a year" recruiters should really ask "why haven't you given up yet?"
I connect UX and SEO dots for streamlined experiences that drive results. | Senior UX Writer & Content Strategist | Perpetual Optimist
I just read a post by a recruiter saying job hopping was cool for a hot minute, but now it's not, and their client will never see a qualified candidate's resume because each of their 5 most recent roles lasted 2 years.
As an unwitting UX/SEO Writer and Content Strategist "job hopper" whose current role is being eliminated for budget reasons, I say if anyone wants to hear the story of how I turned to contract employment as a means to working remotely so I could move to Italy full-time, got knocked sideways by the pandemic 3 months after I made it happen, and am still making my way back to solid ground from, let's connect.
I'll tell you why someone with my experience, skillset, and grit is EXACTLY who you want on your team.
