Baran Ulak, Karst Geurs, & Paul Havinga 🌐 Key Outcomes: 1.      Very few studies use wearable body sensor data to evaluate impacts of Smart Cycling Technologies. 2.      The review and framework guide future studies what want to use robust causal analysis methods and multimodal data to understand whether assistive technologies for cyclists really improve the subjective experience of cycling.  3.      The discussion and research recommendations provide insights into the collaboration between cyclists and AI-powered systems in, on, and around the bicycle. Minute in Medtech:  A perspective from an aspiring Biomedical Engineer, Competitive Cyclist, CHD Warrior, and typical(?) Teen… In a previous edition of #minuteinmedtech, I discussed TrainingPeaks, an online platform for coaches and athletes. The platform aims to enable coaches and athletes to reach their goals. This week I will discuss the devices that enable the use of this platform, specifically for cyclists. This is the Garmin Edge, a device used by cyclists to monitor all forms of data. Through basic speed to heart rate variability and #vo2max readings, this device packs a punch for its size. So the Garmin Edge, what does it do? The Edge is specifically designed for cyclists, so all of its features are catered to that user base. The features on this device are plentiful but I would like to name a few noteworthy ones. The Garmin Edge tracks Dynamic Performance; this feature encompasses a few vital training components, such as Vo2 max, #recovery time, and #trainingload. This feature empowers cycling coaches and athletes to make more accurate and productive paths to training. The Garmin Edge also tracks Heat and Altitude Acclimation. This feature tracks how your body adapts to different training conditions, specifically heat and elevation. As a Florida cyclist, whenever I go to a mountainous region my body isn’t fully adapted and I can’t reach my optimal performance condition. However, if you put me in a hot environment it’s not a big deal because I am well adapted to the heat. The Edge feature will tell you this and assess your level of adaptation as you spend more and more time in that environment. One more feature on the Garmin Edge that I find interesting is the Advanced Workouts feature. Having used it before, it is extremely useful for walking you through your workouts, giving you a step-by-step procedure until the workout is complete. It tells you what power or heart rate zone you need to stay in and for how long. Some honorable mentions are the MTB Dynamics, counting the number of jumps one has completed on a “Sick Downhill Trail” and of course, the Grit and Flow feature, displaying how difficult the trail was in a data-based presentation. Great new for all riders! Suunto is today compatible with Shimano. If you are riding with E-Bike or bike with Di2 shifters, now you can follow your gearing, boost, and battery levels. Analyzing the gearing for road riders in after analysis together with Suunto other data such as elevation, power, and heart rate can illustrate how to make the most out of your rides. This is a great example where to sports tech companies together can achieve something that makes the sports experience better. 5 cycling innovations I'm eagerly waiting for We live in amazing times. Our bikes, wheels and tech are super advanced. Which doesn't mean, to me, that they're complicated but that they server our needs better and better. And I am grateful for that. But there are still a few things that I'd like to see in the mainstream. So here's a super subjective list of 5 innovations that I'd love to see in cycling. 🔦 Garmin Varia x Trek Ion 200. I'd love to see the functionality of the Garmin Varia radar into the form format of a Trek Ion 200 rear lamp. For me, that would be a game changer and I'd buy it instantly. They say size doesn't matter… Well, they're wrong. 🛞 Zero-maintenance wheels. I'd love to see something that's on the juncture of clincher wheels and tubeless. So a reliable tubeless set-up that requires no sealant, no new tyres and no pumping. Not sure if that's even possible 👓 AR eyewear. Glasses and, at some point, visors in TT helmets with all my relevant data overlayed – whatever I have on my Garmin, including navigation and Varia warnings, in front of my eyes (or somewhere in my field of vision). This is actually being worked on, so it's not far along. ♻️ Recyclable carbon. I love carbon bikes. Their characteristics are awesome. But the fact that you can't reliably recycle them is an issue. If we had a material that's as fun, light, adjustable to ride but also recyclable, that would be cool. Doesn't have to be carbon. And no, steel and Ti are NOT the answer. ✋ Electronic, wireless brakes. I'm sure this is being worked on. And there are downsides… But I still feel like this would be super cool to have. No more brake fluid and brake hoses, which means easier maintenance. Now, it's possible that some of these are in development. I just don't know.
