Last week I attended the RLCF Alliance Project Showcase Session at ILA Berlin During the event, RLCF launched the platform that gives Companies the opportunity to share our projects, in order to connect different actors in the value chain. In this context I had the opportunity to present #Ecoplanta project. Repsol has been developing the #Ecoplanta Molecular Recycling Solution project for several years, together with Enerkem as technological leader. Located in El Morell (Tarragona), it will be the first plant in Spain for non-recyclable municipal solid waste recovery into circular methanol that will be used to manufacture new circular materials and advanced biofuels. The plant, which is expected to start operations in 2028, will process around 400,000 tonnes/year of non-recyclable municipal solid waste per year, equivalent to the waste generated in a year by a population of 800,000 people, thus avoiding the use of virgin raw materials. Also, thanks to the plant we will achieve a reduction of 3.4 MtCO2eq of greenhouse gas emissions reductions over the first ten years of operation. The Ecoplanta project was awarded by the first Innovation Fund call, financed by EU Emissions Trading System (EU ETS) revenues and managed by the European Climate, Infrastructure and Environment Executive Agency (CINEA), due to its alignment with key objectives, including reducing greenhouse gas emissions, promoting innovative technologies, and prioritizing projects with high potential for large-scale implementation and widespread adoption. We announced KPI OceanConnect's results for the financial year 2023/24 today. I'm pleased to share that the business achieved robust results yet again! Our volume increased by 9% to 12 million metric tons, with revenue reaching $5.6B. This growth reflects the excellence of our global team and its ability to adapt to market conditions, focus on international trade compliance, and respond to increased marine fuel demand.   We're also proud of our milestones this year in alternative fuels. German container line Hapag-Lloyd AG has released its annual sustainability report this week, uncovering significant emissions reductions attributed to the uptake of LNG and biofuels. According to the report, the company increased its LNG consumption considerably from 4582mt in 2022, to 22769mt in 2023, a move that translated into greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions reductions of 0.8mt over the last year. The report expands upon Hapag Lloyd’s commitment to the LNG pathway, underlining its incremental role in industry-wide decarbonisation. In a recent article, Ship & Bunker noted that the company plans to implement synthetic e-LNG into its fleet just two years from now, utilising LNG and bio-LNG emissions benefits in the meantime. Waiting is not an option. GHG emissions are cumulative and the longer we wait to reduce them the tougher, and more expensive, the decarbonisation challenge will be. LNG offers immediate greenhouse gas reductions and provides a safe, proven, practical, low-cost and low-risk pathway to decarbonisation via bio-LNG and renewable synthetic e-LNG. Use of Biofuel (as per RED sustainability criterion) on vessel has provided good results on improvement in attained CII as well as estimated savings on EU ETS, and Fuel EU. Looking at the regulatory requirements, and current global fleet where significant number of vessels are consuming fossil fuels (HFO, LFO or MDO), Biofuel characteristics shall be suitable to meet Regulatory compliance. #CII #ETS #Fuel EU #GHG
