๐ ๐ธ๐ฐ๐ฑ๐ป๐ด ๐ ๐ ๐ ๐ ๐ด๐ผ ๐ผ๐พ๐ณ๐ด๐ป Hello Networkers, I am delighted to share with you that SCiO has confirmed my knowledge of Stefford Beer's Viable System Model (VSM) with aย 100% ๐บ ๐พ ๐ test score. I can highly recommend everyone to get in touch with SCiO (System and Complexity in Organization) or Dr. Constantin Malik at Malik Inc. to open the door to the world of cybernetics, which is still very unknown but contains the proven concepts to help us to solve the dynamics and crises of today's world. THX to Michael Frahm and his colleagues for making all this possible and easily accessible. #cybernetics #complexity #systemstheory #management #economics

"Millennia of history prove that creativity, that little understood combination of conscious and subconscious thought, intuition and experimentation, is an innate human trait. Within that most spellbinding of creations, the human brain, billions of neurons make connections in novel and unexpected ways, shaped by our individual intellectual and emotional experiences and made concrete by myriad ways of human expression; the arts and the sciences of course but also the interpersonal." Intriguing, isn't it? These profound words could easily be attributed to a renowned philosopher or a seasoned scholar. But here's the twist โ they were penned by none other than a secondary school student, Georgina. Georgina's words are from her entry in our recent competition where pupils tackled one of two question: ๐ง ย Foundations (Ages 10-13): If you could travel back in time 150 years and give the Victorians one piece of modern-day technology, what would you give them and why? ๐ง ย Horizons (Ages 14-17): Does technology enhance or limit human creativity? Why? The submissions we received were nothing short of extraordinary, showcasing exceptional intellectual curiosity and boundless creativity. Georgina's profound insights were just the tip of the iceberg. Anis, another brilliant mind, emerged as the winner of our Foundations competition with an equally compelling entry. Together, they represent the talent among young thinkers today. ๐ We want to extend a heartfelt thank you to everyone who participated in the competition. It was not easy to pick the winners! Delving into the realms of knowledge and understanding empowers you to break free from the shackles of conventional thought. Think of research as a light that shines into the corners of your mind where doubt and uncertainty hide. It gives you new ideas, different ways of seeing things, and solutions to fight the strong grip of fear that can hold you back. Have a wonderful day and week ahead. #MondayMotivation #Quoteoftheweek #Research #FATEInstitute #FATEFoundation

Last week I attended the top-notch CRESSE - Competition and Regulation European Summer School and Conference in Crete. It was a pleasure to participate in both events together with my colleague Giulio Pietrobelli, representing E.CA Economics. ย Crete's weather wasn't the only thing heating up the island; the insightful modules and conference sessions provided valuable takeaways on some of today's hottest topics. I particularly enjoyed the panel on Algorithms and Competition Policy, led by Joseph Harrington and featuring Giacomo Calzolari, Michal Gal, Jenny Haydock, Frederic Jenny, and Ana Sofia Rodrigues. THESE ARE MY KEY INSIGHTS: ๐ Understanding pricing algorithms: Code can be analyzed to understand high prices, but human interpretation is challenging. Assessing algorithm behavior in market conditions is even more challenging because algorithms adapt quickly. ๐ Regulation: Restricting access to data is often ineffective, and direct regulation of diverse algorithms is impractical. ๐ Responsibility: Developers should be accountable for the code they produce and record historical information used for algorithm outputs. ๐ Policy Implications: โ Policies should address anti-competitive effects while preserving pro-competitive benefits. โ Ownership of algorithms should become part of merger assessment; assessment with longer time horizons needed as algorithms evolve. โ Legal framework needs to be updated to address gaps in enforcement, in particular the issue of intent in algorithmic collusion. ย Attending CRESSE was a fantastic opportunity to deepen my understanding of these critical issues and to network with leading experts in the field. I look forward to applying these insights to our work at E.CA Economics! #CRESSE2024 #Algorithms #Competition #Antitrustย

Fasten your seatbelts, everyone - yesterday we began our journey to boost and disrupt science ๐ ๐๐ We had a great international brainstorming webinar, with people coming from at least 4 continents. Thanks to Marco Masia, Sara Ricardo, Eddie Lee, all of the Institute of Science Disruption team ๐ช , and our great audience ๐ ! We've reached some very interesting insights and leads. The discussion will continue next month, in our next brainstorming session (join us!) Here is what we talked about: 1. I presented the awkward state of science: Studies show that while the number of scientific publications doubles (!) every 14 years, science (as a whole) is becoming less innovative, less disruptive, less productive.ย This actually creates a great opportunity to boost science by thinking differently about it. 2. Marco Masia, from the University of Vienna and IOSD, analyzed the main drivers of scientific research, and suggested insights for the academia. 3. Sara Ricardo, from Siris Academic (Spain), offered insights on what universities should do to empower researchers and boost innovative research. 4. Eddie Lee, from Complexity Science Hub (Austria) offered a complex-systems perspective on innovation in science. It was a lively discussion, as we tried to overcome our disagreements on what should be done. We also got some very interesting insights from the audience, which we will investigate further. IOSD's website: www.ScienceDisruption.org Thanks Uri Schattner, Michael Lazar, Luba Weissmann! ๐ฅ

Is a banana taped to a wall art? Allegre Hadida FRSA delivers an incredibly engaging course on Creative Arts and Media Management at Cambridge Judge Business School, and it was even more enjoyable because my classmates came from such a huge range of backgrounds. They fundamentally see things differently and bring killer perspectives to the conversation. We tackled the big issue of "what is art? what is not art?" - Beauty or novelty are usually considered art, according to architect (Christian Veddeler) - Art delivers non-routine returns, according to the international tax economist (Wael Tfaily, CFA) I've also learned that theaters like the National Theatre invest in a portfolio of productions like a VC invests in a portfolio of startups. The NT knows that not all shows will be profitable, but it counts on its hits to cover the cost of experimentation and artistic development. The year's Reverse Spring Break is off to a solid start. #EMBAย #reversespringbreakย #cjbsย #lifelonglearningย #cjbsalumni #lifetimevalueย #cjbsdifferenceย #cjbsknowledgeย #cjbsfriendship #cjbsconnectsย #universityofcambridge #oldschool
