Why I chose pathology as a speacialty? Choosing a medical speacialty can be overwhelming at times given the many options to chose from. I went into the field of pathology with very little background knowledge given my limited exposure. A few years in, I reflect and ask myself if I made the best choice. Without any doubt, I absolutely chose a wonderful speacialty and live without any regrets. Histology professionals are an integral part of the medical diagnostic process, working in anatomic pathology laboratories to prepare, process, analyze, and perform advanced testing on patient tissue specimens. The accuracy, quality, timeliness, and reliability of the results depend on the knowledge and skill of the trained histologist working in conjunction with a pathologist to arrive at a definitive diagnosis necessary for clinical decision-making and effective patient treatment. These professionals play a critical role in ensuring that patients receive accurate diagnoses and effective treatment. They work tirelessly behind the scenes, analyzing patient tissue specimens and performing advanced testing to arrive at a definitive diagnosis. Despite the importance of their work, histology professionals face significant challenges. Pathologists are facing great pressures due to the increasing workload, the growing complexity of their work, and vacancies of 10-12% and rising The number of histopathology requests to laboratories has increased by an average of 4.5% year on year since 2007. As a medical professional, I share my concern about the future of our career.
