The Situation:
"But the cattle industry is a major source of Brazilian economic development and the government is striving to conquer new export markets. The world’s top beef exporter wants everyone, everywhere to eat its beef."
The Casuistry:
“We’re not slaughtering elite cattle. We’re breeding them. And at the end of the line, going to feed the whole world,...”
The stated Concern:
It [Brazil] has the world’s largest beef cattle population, and that’s problematic; of the nation’s total greenhouse emissions, 86% are linked to its food production, mainly for beef and soy...,"
The anthropocentric fix:
"One of the best ways to cut livestock emissions is reducing cows’ age of slaughter...,"
The real, enduring, and ultimately lethal problem:
Nowhere in this gushing paean to carnism is there the slightest regard for the animals being brutally bred, restrained, exploited, slaughtered, and ultimately butchered, all for human avarice and gustatory pleasure.
The author, and all those who engage in this commoditization of other beings, who clearly revel in the ingestion of the flesh of dead animals, are utterly indifferent to their plight, devoid of any feeling for their lives, lives led strictly according to human desires and caprices, not their own predilections and proclivities.
So long as humans engage in this barbarism, eschewing a reverence for life for self-centered misuse and abuse of God's creatures, for that period of time will we march at the quick step toward planetary degradation, depredation, and final ruination.
So long as we commercialize and commodify that which is sacred, i.e. life, for that timeframe will our tyrannical annihilation of the biosphere, our shared home, proceed unchecked.
May God forgive us.
