Legler’s Legacy
Once upon a time (that is 2-3 decades ago) European mills dominated the fashion denim world; in almost every country there was one or more denim mills producing some of the most interesting and innovative fabrics. Sadly, they are almost all gone. One mill stood out for a long time for their cotton products in denim, corduroy, and flats: Legler. Originally set up in Switzerland in the 1700s, by the 1800s it relocated to Ponte San Pietro in northern Italy.

Denim isn’t quite as Americana as it seems.
Jeans are absolutely everywhere. Most people reading this will have at least one pair. But they are synonymous with one place in particular: cowboys, bikers, James Dean, hip-hop – it has to be America.
The most famous American manufacturer of denim was obviously Levi Strauss, a German immigrant. His great innovation was using rivets to reinforce the jeans, an invention of a Latvian named Jacob Davis. Situating itself in California, Levi Strauss & Co. sought to capitalise on the gold rush.
But amazingly both the words ‘denim’ and ‘jeans’ are of French origin.
The ‘nim’ in ‘denim’ refers to Nîmes in southern France. ‘De Nîmes’ simply means ‘from Nîmes’. Why is Nîmes relevant? Mills in the city were said to produce something very close to the coarse indigo-dyed twill we know today.
But Nîmes can’t be credited with inventing the textile. Some etymologists believe the word ‘jeans’ to be a French version of the word ‘Genoa’, an Italian city. A less refined version of the Nîmes fabric that was closer to corduroy could be found in Genoa. French entrepreneurs sought to copy and improve on it.
So while our reference points for jeans are most certainly American it is yet again another tale of exchange – in both manufacturing and language.

The Birkenstock Success Story: A Triumph of Timeless Branding
When Johann Adam Birkenstock registered as a “subject and shoemaker” in 1774, he likely couldn’t have imagined that his small business would evolve into a global footwear empire. Today, Birkenstock is synonymous with comfort, durability, and timeless style, all thanks to a branding strategy that has stood the test of time.
This success story highlights how Birkenstock's consistent commitment to quality, innovation, and a unique brand identity has made it a powerhouse in the footwear industry for over two centuries.
The Foundation: Quality and Innovation
From its inception, Birkenstock has been dedicated to quality craftsmanship. In the early 20th century, Konrad Birkenstock, a descendant of Johann, revolutionized the footwear industry by inventing the contoured footbed.
This innovation provided unparalleled support and comfort, setting Birkenstock apart from other shoe manufacturers. The footbed remains a cornerstone of Birkenstock’s product line, symbolizing the brand’s commitment to orthopedically inspired design and long-lasting quality.
Staying True to Core Values
One of Birkenstock’s most admirable branding strategies is its steadfast commitment to its core values. Unlike many brands that chase fleeting trends, Birkenstock has stayed true to its identity. The classic Birkenstock sandal, with its simple, functional design, has remained largely unchanged over the years. This consistency has reinforced the brand’s image as a timeless, reliable choice for consumers.
Adaptation and Global Expansion
Adaptation has also played a key role in Birkenstock’s enduring success. The brand has effectively expanded its product range to include various styles and designs, catering to diverse tastes and needs while maintaining the hallmark comfort and quality. Additionally, Birkenstock’s strategic global expansion, particularly in the United States and Asia, has helped it tap into new markets and grow its international presence.
The Power of Timeless Branding
Birkenstock’s success is a testament to the power of timeless branding. By staying true to its core values, emphasizing quality and comfort, and strategically evolving with the times, Birkenstock has built a brand that transcends generations and trends. It’s a brand that has not only survived but thrived since 1774, proving that a well-crafted brand identity, rooted in authenticity and consistent quality, can endure the test of time.
For businesses and marketers, Birkenstock’s journey offers valuable lessons in the importance of maintaining a strong brand identity, embracing innovation, and staying attuned to consumer values. In a world where many brands come and go, Birkenstock stands out as a beacon of enduring success and a masterclass in effective branding.

👢 👠 👡 Ladies' shoes were a hot topic among manufacturers a century ago, as seen in this article "What's Happening to Leather" from our May, 1924 edition. The article laments the "toboggan" slide of the industry and posits several reason for a downturn in sales, including "the modern millinery shoe, which has been adopted by our women folk." As seen in the photographs, these shoes "popular among our niftiest women dressers are as near an approach to the sandals of ancient Greece, Rome, and Egypt as modern styles will permit." The author even pointed to the recent discovery of King Tut's tomb as cause for the trend. In addition, automobiles and mass transit "caused walking to become almost a lost art," while the rise of rubber soles "administered a solar plexus blow to the leather market" and demand for snake, shark, and lizard skin goods were also to blame.
