My New UPDATE Gheller - Professor Learn about autism, a complex and challenging long-term condition for many individuals and their families worldwide, and an aspect of human diversity to others. This free course, Understanding autism, introduces the autism spectrum, how it is experienced by different individuals and families, and why it is a global concern. The course explains how ideas about autism have evolved and explores diagnosis, causes, intervention and life-span development. Widely varying perspectives on autism are illustrated and key societal and cross-cultural issues highlighted.

Thanks to the department of social services for presenting such a thorough evidence-based approach. While this strategy plan is well-crafted, I believe that it could benefit from placing a bit more emphasis on two specific sections. Firstly, there's a crucial need to enhance social and emotional support for families with autistic children, as it not only brings comfort to them but also enhances resources for the children themselves. Secondly, providing enhanced learning and technology support warrants greater consideration in the plan. Furthermore, recognizing and respecting the diversity within the autism community, including differences in culture, language, and socioeconomic status, is essential. Providing culturally competent and linguistically appropriate services can ensure that all families receive the support they need. Thanks you for offering assistance to those who require it

I am a parent who has a young adult child with Autism. He is very good at masking. I urge you to watch “Inside our Autistic Minds” (Binge) to discover more about the vast and diverse spectrum of autistic behaviours so we can all develop a deeper understanding of “social masking” and how the vast majority of those living with autism cannot survive in the real world without it. Additionally, there are a lot of undiagnosed individuals with autism who end up having burn outs, break downs or “reclusive behaviours” throughout their lifetime and have no clue why. The more society understands autism ( and adhd), the more we can help. Constant social masking depletes daily functioning and invariably results in severe anxiety, suicidal ideation and escalating mental health issues. Perhaps it’s up to those who can easily adapt to others to do so rather than expecting individuals who struggle neurodevelopmentally to adapt and have no choice but to mask their entire persona in order to avoid social rejection. I think we can all do better so that others have the comfort and safety to “unmask”.

In our latest member’s blog, Dave Richard discusses the difficulties of receiving an Autism diagnosis later in life, in relation to his own identity, and to wider issues surrounding the lack of follow-up social care. Naomi Boast showed us this video at the Sterling Networking group last week. It was very powerful and worth a watch. The National Autistic Society created these videos to increase public understanding of autism. The 5 big things they want the public to understand were that autistic people can: · need extra time to process information · experience anxiety in social situations · experience anxiety with unexpected changes · find noise, smells and bright lights painful and distressing · become overwhelmed and experience a 'meltdown' or 'shutdown'. https://lnkd.in/eE_kssP5
