What is the Batterybox, you ask? A stray battery with uncovered terminals poses a safety risk, a fire hazard, and is a burden on the environment. Simply explained, the Batterybox is a stylish fireproof box, shaped like a battery, which can prevent short circuits, overheating and fire in consumer batteries from spreading outside the Batterybox. At the top of the Batterybox, there is a dispenser for stickers to tape the battery terminals. A battery, in which at least one of the terminals is covered and delivered at a return point, becomes a resource where important metals are recovered, which is both environmentally friendly and sustainable. At the same time, the number of fires due to short circuits and batteries going astray is reduced, which provides an even greater environmental benefit. A piece of Americana appeared at the landfill's e-waste (electronic waste) recycling area, an RCA Radio B 67.5 volt battery. Estimated production is around 1951. Gen X and Gen Z whipper-snappers may not know that the Radio Corporation of America (aka RCA) was a huge company in the US prior to the imports of Panasonic, Sony, Hitachi, and other foreign brands. The RCA B battery consisted of zinc-carbon construction according to the 1962 RCA Battery Manual. The B batteries powered dial-knobbed radios which were made of handcrafted wood or metal. Radios made in this era were wired together point-to-point before printed circuit boards became common. I checked eBay to see the value of an RCA B battery. Prices ranged from $19 to $34. Some common radio programs back then? Amos N Andy, Gunsmoke, This is Your Life, and George Burns and Gracie Allen, are just a few. Technically, this battery was made in the Boomer I generation which spans from 1946 to 1954. The Boomer II generation, 1955 to 1964, was just young enough to have missed being drafted into war. I was born at the tail-end of the Boomer II generation. I never listened to Gunsmoke...we watched it on TV.
