It’s that time of the year again when people take a look in their crystal ball and try to see what lies ahead in the upcoming year. TrendForce Corporation has done just that and details the technology trends for 2024. Not surprisingly #AI is top of the list. But is it really only a year ago that ChatGPT was introduced? And now generative AI applications are boosting the demand for AI servers to exceed 1.2 million units by the end of 2023. That’s a year-over-year increase of 37.7%. Trendforce expects this number to grow 38% and that AI servers will make up 12% of all server shipments. HBM stands out as a critical DRAM product for AI. With the growing complexity of training models and applications, demand for HBM is expected to skyrocket. As the average unit price of HBM is several times higher than other DRAM products, it’s projected that in 2024, HBM is poised for an annual growth rate of 172%. This growth in AI is also significantly spurring the demand for 2.5D packaging technology that enhances AI computational power by integrating computing chips and memory. This demand will also further nurture the development of 3D packaging technologies. These are just three of the 12 trends that Trendforce sees, but seeing that the first three are all connected to memory, shows how important this commodity product is now and in the future.
