Not everyone realizes that #instudio projects are also a big part of my business working as a #calligrapher full time. What usually gets shared online is the flashy events and the #livepersonalisation for guests (which are SO much fun). Today I wanted to share another way companies can make an impact to their clients and employees! Recently I worked with the iconic Make Up Forever brand for this #instudioengraving project - I #handengraved the names of makeup artists on their favourite MUFE brush and then these were then gifted to them! (It was a challenge to be able to work so small so I have to shout out my trusty magnifying glass for making the job a lot easier on my eyes - I loved the way it turned out!) I know the impact of these brushes means a lot to the artists receiving them and shows just how much MUFE cares about those who represent them (I have literally heard from make up artists that they wish ALL of their brushes were engraved with their names to they don't get pilfered while they're working on site themselves hahaha) So, thank you to MUFE for trusting me 🫶🏼💄 If you have any items you need personalised, don't forget to consider in studio orders as well as #livecalligraphyevents. They can be just as impactful! --- #makeupbrushengraving #handengraved #calligraphyengraving #makeupbrushpersonalized #makeupforever #engraving #calligraphyreel #calligrapher #neilsonletters

In the whirlwind of emotions that define engagement days, every moment is fleeting, yet every second is a masterpiece waiting to be captured. Today, I want to share a glimpse into the art of wedding photography, focusing on a single, timeless image that speaks volumes. 📸 The Moment: Just after the final brushstroke of her makeup, the bride radiated a blend of anticipation, joy, and serene beauty. This moment, right after the makeup artist's magic touch, is when true emotions surface - raw, unfiltered, and incredibly genuine. Why Immediate Clicks Post-Makeup Matter: Lighting & Freshness: The soft glow of the makeup, under natural light, showcases the bride at her most beautiful, mirroring the dawn of her new journey. Emotion & Authenticity: Capturing the first look post-makeup allows us to seize the purest emotions - a mix of excitement, nervousness, and happiness. Perfection in Detail: This timing ensures every detail is impeccable, from the shimmer of the eyeshadow to the curve of the smile, preserving the effort and artistry of the makeup artist. This shot was not just about preserving a moment but about encapsulating the beginning of a love story. As a wedding photographer, it's these snapshots of unspoken tales that I aim to immortalize. It's a reminder that beauty, in its most powerful form, is ephemeral, and capturing it requires not just skill but timing.

For headshot clients one of the first questions we ask is "Do you have a best side?". "Why", you ask. As a photographer, I want to show people in their best light. To do that, I need to discover if they're aware of their best side and if not, help them discover if they have one. When we do it's like a breakthrough moment. The feeling of self-discovery really makes a difference to the client's confidence and approachability. That's what I'm after in the photographs. Anyone who has experienced the discovery process with us knows that there are many nuances and subtleties when it comes to a great headshot. That's why we spend the time to coach and educate our clients, including one of the first steps, which is to work out which side of their face to turn toward the camera. Research suggests that c.40% of us have a left-sided bias when we're processing facial images, with c.30% favouring the right. And, according to an article I found in Science News: "Your best side may be your left cheek, according to a new study. Images of the left side of the face are perceived and rated as more pleasant than pictures of the right side of the face, possibly due to the fact that we present a greater intensity of emotion on the left side of our face." Although the study it refers to is from 2012, the same seems consistent across similar studies today. So back to these images... Which one do you favour, and why? Thank you to Dr. Mandy Zimmermann for her permission to use these images from our recent photoshoot. And a big thank you to Mandy Priestley Co-Founder and makeup artist at Pixel Roses for the natural-looking makeup. #Headshots #BestSide #DiscoverYourBest #ConfidenceBoost #Approachability #LeftSideBias #RightSideBias

Fantastic photography for founders and freelancers | Release your inner confidence | Create a killer first impression | Bring your personal brand to life | NO FILLER IMAGES - JUST KILLER IMAGES
How clients think a photo-shoot works: Take Photos > Edit Photos > Deliver Photos How it actually works: > Phone call > Booking > Brief > Contract > Shot List > Location Scouting & Booking > Equipment Prep > Makeup / Hair / Wardrobe Styling > Lighting Setup > Camera Setup > Test Shots > Posing > Full Shoot > Additional Backup > Image Review 1 & Culling > Image Review 2 & Selects > Image Review 3 & Selects > Lo-Res Export > Online Gallery Creation > Image Review 4 & Selects > Image Review 5 & Final Selects > RAW Conversion and Edit > Retouching & Colour Grade > Final Image Export & Delivery > Revision Round > Testimonial Request > “Can you make the logo bigger?” Thankfully, the client is shielded from nearly all of the stuff on the second list! Pic is from a totally awesome shoot for Forming Reality, with the inimitable Danny Letton on directing duties. __________ Don’t let your imagery drown in the vast online ocean. Make sure your pictures stop the scroll and generate the engagement you want. DM me "SHOOT" to learn more. __________ #SKBrandPhotography #MakingYouIconic #DontJustShowUp-BlowUp #GetThePicture

HEADSHOT UPDATES Sometimes when we realize our headshots need updating, we suddenly feel we needed it done yesterday. When that happens, we scramble and pick the first person we Google, and then sometimes regrets follow. It is good to know that even in finding a photographer, there are many points to consider, to ensure you will have the desired outcome, after all, this single image is supposed to show your best 'face' to the world. Look for... 1. Connection and ease with the photographer. This is crucial, because you can't smile and be at ease, if there's no trust. Clues start with the first phone chat or timely email and text response time. 2. Good advice, on how to do your hair, accessories that enhance not clutter, colors and clothes that make you feel energetic, an expert makeup artist in her arsenal for you, a big plus. 3. Posing tips DURING your session, because you are not a professional model, and you don't have to be. 4. Expert edit touch ups, because sometimes we are so anxious, we wake up with a pimple ON the day of the session. And, no one wants to look plastic. 5. Timely delivery. Because we needed our images yesterday.

I often get asked “how should I present myself for my corporate headshot?” The first part of the answer is try to look like the real you. Wear clothing you would wear to an interview or first meeting with a client and avoid busy patterns, these may be a distraction from the star of the show, you! Attend the shoot looking refreshed (this is why I often recommend having it done in the AM). A professional hair and make up artist is not essential but definitely recommended. A professional will use high quality products, know where to highlight and how to stop skin appearing shiny and reflective which produces a much better outcome. Remember, a high quality headshot is an investment in your success, not just an expense. Most professional photographers and make up artists will provide you with a tax invoice meaning that you are able to claim the expense at tax time. My advice - don’t scrimp, get it done once properly so that you end up with images you love and are proud to display. After all you don’t want to have to do it all again due to not being happy with your images. #professionalheadshots #corporateheadshots #corporateheadshotsperth #professionalportraits #InvestInSuccess

Tips for Getting the Perfect Headshot Achieving the perfect headshot requires planning and attention to detail. Here are some tips to help you get it right: 1. Hire a Professional Photographer: A professional photographer who specializes in headshots will know how to use lighting, angles, and backgrounds to your advantage. Their expertise is invaluable in creating a high-quality image. 2. Dress Appropriately: Wear attire that reflects your profession and the image you want to project. For corporate headshots, this means formal business attire. For creative headshots, you might opt for something that showcases your personal style. 3. Choose the Right Background: The background should complement your appearance without being distracting. Neutral backgrounds are often best for corporate headshots, while more creative settings can work for artists and freelancers. 4. Focus on Expression: Your expression should convey confidence and approachability. Practice different expressions in the mirror to see what works best for you. Relax and be yourself during the shoot. 5. Grooming and Makeup: Pay attention to grooming and, if necessary, hire a professional makeup artist. Subtle makeup can enhance your features and give you a polished look. 6. Consistency: Use the same headshot across all professional platforms to maintain a consistent personal brand. This helps people recognize you easily and reinforces your professional image.
