Do you know why we are having a hiring crisis in law enforcement today? Yeah, yeah I've heard the numbers and talk about baby boomers (and now GenX) retirements, cultural shifts, etc. When you boil it down, the real reason that law enforcement is struggling is because we still think that there are enough working officers in the applicant pool to "Head Hunt" from other agencies. Everyone is screaming for experienced officers, but you didn't hire and train them up.... and the BIG ONE, offer them a compelling reason to remain in the industry. Simple math, there are no longer anywhere near enough licensed peace officers remaining in our country to fill all of the open positions. If we want people to come into law enforcement, we need to start working together to recruit for "The Career" and not just "The Department". How do we do this? Tell me your ideas.
