Sometimes, inspiration comes in the form of a furry friend! 🐶 I recently stumbled upon this heartwarming video on my phone from our annual Face-to-Face meeting in Colorado. Our incredible DEI trainer surprised us all by bringing an adorable puppy to the Coleman team gathering. And let me tell you, the impact was far greater than any of us could have imagined. As a Chief Innovation Officer, I'm constantly seeking ways to cultivate an environment that encourages innovation, growth, and, most importantly, inclusivity. That day, with our furry companion, we achieved all of that and more. The puppy created a space where walls came down, laughter echoed through the room, and bonds were strengthened. Innovation doesn't always have to start with technology or processes. Sometimes, it begins with fostering a sense of belonging, and our four-legged friend did just that. We found that when people feel comfortable, valued, and part of a caring community, their creativity and willingness to collaborate soar to new heights. This experience reinforced the importance of thinking outside the box and embracing unconventional approaches to innovation. It reminded us that innovation isn't just about technology; it's about the people, the culture, and the relationships we build along the way. Since my reflection post from last Friday resonated with many of you, I thought I’d turn this into a (somewhat) weekly ritual. As I mentioned, my work as an independent consultant has given me the freedom to hop on virtual calls or catch up with people in person over tea quite often. Here are my top 5 conversations from this week... 1. On Tuesday, AIGA San Francisco x Women in Leadership & Design (WILD) hosted a virtual fireside chat with the legendary Ana Arriola-Kanada, the recently appointed co-Managing Director of IDEO Tokyo. As two queer designer leaders, we talked about Ana’s career journey, and their favorite books, quotes, mentors, and more. I finally caught up with Seattle-based Bonnie Kate Wolf this week! Bonnie has had quite a cool life journey: while she’s been contracting at Netflix for a few years, she runs her own independent practice as an icon designer / art director for major brands and is even getting more into interior design too. The best part? Hearing about her aspirations to be the next Susan Kare — and she’s well on her way. Apparently, I was destined to connect with some great folx at Bloomberg / Bloomberg Media this week. First, I caught up with (former Bloomberg Exec) Katie Manderfield and Dylan Fergus on a fun side project, and then today, I had the honor of chatting with Michael Walker about potentially coming to speak at their NYC office in November as part of their cool Creativity Series (thanks for the intro, Jasmeet Sidhu!) All in all, Bloomberg connections are clearly in the air 💫 4. Krystal Lauk, founder of cool studio Lauk Haus, had me and a few other creatives over for a traditional Korean meal. It was fun to hang with Melody Yung (Founder of Yung Studio) again, get to finally meet David William Scott in person, and hear about lettering artist and creative entrepreneur, Simona Bunardzhieva’s adventures. 💃🏽 5. Finally, I’m so happy to share that Li-Anne Arabella Dias is joining the WILD leadership team as its new Creative Lead, volunteer. By day, she’s the Head of Brand at Handshake! The conversations since we’ve met have been super organic and I’m super impressed with her. The fact that she’s already helped CCA students for their portfolio reviews is a testament to her dedication to emerging talent. Last night I had the immense honour of being a speaker at Fuckup Nights Montréal alongside with @Sarah Bourbonnais and Raphaëlle Viau. Rather than making things easier by sharing a video of the talk, I’d like to share my speech adapted for written form. Feel free to laugh at random; it was much lighter and funnier than it sounds written down. For #internationalwomenday, I delved into how gender norms shape us, highlighting the stark differences in upbringing between boys and girls that lead to discrepancies down the line, particularly in the business world. Despite a family background where women held high positions in career and academia, I found myself conforming to societal biases. Embracing the "idiot hero" trope as a survival tactic and personal brand, I downplayed my successes, stifling my potential and removing my agency and power. My career journey—from 'accidentally' landing a job at L’Oreal to 'unintentionally' launching a successful marketing agency—has been a rollercoaster of challenges and triumphs. Yet, I realized I'd internalized a limiting narrative, hindering my growth and downplaying my own work and worth. Over the last few months, I have been working on breaking free from self-imposed constraints by re-writing my story: I am Natalia Kaplan, founder of the 2x award-nominated marketing agency On Point Agency, a trailblazer in the marketing world, a passionate advocate for women's empowerment, and an unapologetic artist. Let's shatter stereotypes, redefine our narratives, and help others craft their own success. Yes, it's true that once you have experienced a culture like DPL's, it can be difficult to conform to the corporate culture found in most organizations. DPL's rebel innovation culture emphasizes experimentation, disruption, and collaboration, which can be liberating and empowering for employees. In contrast, many corporate cultures are more rigid and hierarchical, which can be stifling and frustrating.
