Ever wondered how to accurately measure the brightness of marine searchlights? It's all about understanding lumens and candelas. While both units measure light output, they serve different purposes and can't be used interchangeably. 🔆 Lumens: Measure total visible light emitted from a source. 🕯️ Candelas: Measure light intensity in a specific direction. Knowing which to prioritize depends on your lighting needs. Use candelas for directional lights and lumens for ambient sources. https://hubs.ly/Q02DJ6mZ0

So how do we get a moody overhead light look in a scene? Let’s break it down. 1. Place your main light overhead on a boom. I am using my C stand with the arm boomed out but in a real life scenario, you’d want to use an actual boom so you could get it out a lot further. 2. Place a soft box on your light to get it bigger softer source. 3. Place a grid on the soft box or a skirt around the bottom to control your light from hitting the surrounding environment. This will help maintain that high contrast, Moody scene. 4. Lastly, use a bounce underneath the subjects chin to increase the shadows if it’s a little too moody. You can also use this as catch light for your subject as well!
