Many people confuse the terms “service dog” and “therapy dog." Do you know the difference? Therapy dogs provide comfort to others, and people often volunteer with their therapy dogs at nursing homes, hospitals, and schools. Service dogs provide at least one task for their owners. ADA defines service dogs as “dogs that are individually trained to do work or perform tasks for people with disabilities.” Example tasks for service dogs include grounding, anchoring, creating a physical buffer, retrieving items, and alerting to blood sugar levels. We provide superior therapy and service dog training. Check out our website to learn more, and reach out to us with any questions. #servicedogssavelives #therapydogsrock #pettherapy

What makes schools AND nursing homes safer for everyone? Dogs. Pilot programs in California schools saw significant success with COVID-19 detecting dogs. To train the dogs on what COVID smelled like, researchers knew, they’d have to go to the smelliest places of a human. Options: head, pits, groin, feet. So, socks were collected from both infected and uninfected people, and 2 golden Labs named Rizzo and Scarlett learned to alert their handler to COVID positive socks. From behind a curtain, for privacy and to minimize distractions, Rizzo and Scarlett sniff the ankles of each child as they walk into school. If the dogs smell infection, they sit. If the handler isn’t sure whom the dog is alerting, the dogs use their noses to point out the right one. When a dog alerts to a child, that child receives a standard COVID test to confirm or deny the results. 85% fewer tests had to be used - saving the school time, money, and resources. Not to mention who WOULDN’T prefer a sniff to the ankle over the mascara wand up the nose? Initial results gave the dogs 83% sensitivity and 90% specificity, with a 90% overall accuracy - numbers that were notably lower than the dogs’ results in more controlled environments, giving researchers hope they’d improve with exposure to the school environment. Next up, now that they’ve seen success in schools, COVID detection dogs are testing in nursing homes. Since nursing homes still face some of the highest risks, dogs could save many lives there!
