Coastal Scientist at Deltares USA

I am happy to share that on June 20th, I successfully defended my PhD thesis titled "Navigating the Storm." It was a journey filled with challenges and learning, and I am grateful for the unwavering support from my promotor Dano Roelvink, co-promotors Ap van Dongeren & Jose A. A. Antolinez, advisor Jay Veeramony, and opponents Rick Luettich, Michalis Vousdoukas, Fernando J. Mendez and ad reniers A special thank you to my paranymphs, Wietse Boon and Stef Maree, who were instrumental in the smooth running of the defense process and after party. I also deeply appreciate my family, friends, and colleagues who joined for the occasion, lending their support and making the day even more memorable. Most importantly, my heartfelt thanks to my wife, Patrice Lucas whose support has been my pillar through these years of academic and non-academic pursuits. As I close this chapter, I look forward to a brief break — backpacking the John Muir Trail throughout most of July. This adventure in the Sierras will be a time for reflection and recharging before I continue my career at Deltares USA in the San Francisco Bay Area. Thank you all once again for your support and encouragement. I am excited about the future and eager to continue working in such a rewarding field! PS. Congratulations Kees. A great accomplishment. I did something somewhat similar many years ago to reflect and recharge after graduation. I accepted a job offer that gave me the summer off. Never had time off before that. Backpacked through Europe for nearly three months. To this day I often remember that time in my life. Enjoy and make memories.

Every dissertation defense should include someone wielding a ceremonial mace. 🙂
