We are partnering with NC Sea Grant to offer a joint funding opportunity for graduate student interdisciplinary research. Full-time graduate students at colleges and universities in North Carolina are eligible to apply for the $10,000 award. Applications are due April 8, 2024. The ARC has announced the outcomes of the 2023 Future Fellowships scheme. Congratulations to OI members Dr Karen Filbee-Dexter and Dr Wenhua Zhao! 𝗗𝗿 𝗙𝗶𝗹𝗯𝗲𝗲-𝗗𝗲𝘅𝘁𝗲𝗿: 𝗤𝘂𝗮𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗳𝘆𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗸𝗲𝗹𝗽 𝗰𝗮𝗿𝗯𝗼𝗻 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗻𝘂𝘁𝗿𝗶𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗳𝗹𝗼𝘄𝘀 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗻𝗮𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲-𝗯𝗮𝘀𝗲𝗱 𝘀𝗼𝗹𝘂𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀. This fellowship aims to resolve carbon removal and nutrient mitigation potential of Australia’s kelp forests now and in future. It will create new understanding of the ecosystem services provided by the Great Southern Reef, and the capacity of kelp forests to provide nature-based solutions to reduce emissions and improve coastal water quality. 𝗗𝗿 𝗪𝗲𝗻𝗵𝘂𝗮 𝗭𝗵𝗮𝗼: 𝗔𝗱𝘃𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲𝗱 𝗵𝘆𝗱𝗿𝗼𝗱𝘆𝗻𝗮𝗺𝗶𝗰𝘀 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗻𝗲𝘅𝘁 𝗴𝗲𝗻𝗲𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗼𝗳 𝗼𝗳𝗳𝘀𝗵𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝗶𝗻𝗳𝗿𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗿𝘂𝗰𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲. This project aims to develop rigorous and precise prediction models for next generation offshore infrastructure, by capturing nonlinear wave-structure interaction. This project expects to generate new knowledge in offshore hydrodynamics (a branch of fluid mechanics) applicable to Ocean Engineering, using cutting-edge numerical technology, state-of-the-art physical modelling, and unique full-scale field data. This week on the Pivot Circle, we jump in to the Skout Strategy, Inc. summer series, where we explore our summer travels to conferences, partner meetings, and family trips. This week we kick things off with the opportunity to attend the Workshop on Advancing Controlled Environment Agriculture on Land and In Space in the Next 20 Years hosted by the US Department of Agriculture (USDA) Agricultural Research Service (ARS) , U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), and NASA - National Aeronautics and Space Administration at the The University of Toledo on June 27 and 28. And it did not disappoint. Walking away from the workshop, my mindset around controlled environment agriculture fundamentally shifted. There were some serious "ah ha" moments that will have profound impacts on the way the Skout Strategy, Inc. team moves forward in this space. There were four key takeaways from the workshop: 1. Energy, Energy, Energy - We must continue to innovate on this front. 2. Pests and Disease in CEA - We must remain diligent in our approach to IPM. 3. Genetics for Indoor Grown CEA - This is one of the great frontiers approaching CEA. 4. CEA does not always equate to food security - There is a misalignment with the way many communicate the impact of CEA. "For CEA to continue to grow and become a large part of the resilience behind local and regional food systems, we must find a solution to the energy problem. Innovations at the nexus of food, energy, and water provide significant potential to open new areas of collaboration amongst industry that lend themselves to the emergence of new business models in a rapidly shifting climatic and economic environment." It was an incredible experience to be able to mix it up with this illustrious group of minds who are continuing to support the growth of this industry. 10 Things We Learnt in May 2024 At Gowing Life, we delight in compiling a record of our discoveries throughout 2024. Here's a glimpse into what we've unearthed in May! 1. Flamingo Crop Milk: Contrary to appearances, flamingos feeding their young with a red fluid are not pecking their partners' brains but sharing crop milk, a red secretion produced by both male and female birds. 2. The Higgs Bison: Named after the Higgs boson, this extinct bison species was identified through ancient DNA and cave art. Thought to be a hybrid of steppe bison and aurochs, it roamed Europe over 10,000 years ago. 3. Insects and Light: A recent study reveals that insects circle artificial lights due to the dorsal light response, an instinct that helps them fly parallel to the horizon by keeping their backs to the light. 4. The Pomato: A remarkable grafted plant that yields both cherry tomatoes above ground and potatoes below, showcasing the marvels of agricultural innovation. 5. Accidental Geoengineering: Regulations reducing sulphur dioxide emissions from ships have inadvertently warmed oceans. This raises questions about deliberate geoengineering to combat climate change. 6. Incest Avoidance via Scent: Evolution appears to use scent to prevent incest, with humans and animals preferring partners with dissimilar major histocompatibility complex (MHC) molecules, promoting genetic diversity. 7. The Smell of Space: Objects returning from space smell burnt due to UV-induced chemical reactions. NASA even recreated this scent for astronaut training, and you can experience it too with the perfume Eau De Space. 8. ISS Speed in Flight Simulator: Visualising the speed of the International Space Station in Microsoft Flight Simulator is a breathtaking demonstration of its velocity and the marvels of modern simulation technology. 9. Coin Rotation Paradox: Rolling one coin around another of the same size results in two full rotations, not one, due to the combined effects of rolling distance and circular motion. 10. Brook's Law: Adding manpower to late software projects often delays them further, highlighting the complexity of communication and integration in collaborative tasks. The tech designed to support life in space will likely be similar to tech that transforms farming here on earth. How we feed a growing population and how we manage waste are problems shared, regardless of where we dwell in the universe. Mike Dixon, Director of the Controlled Environment Systems Research Facility (CESRF) at U of G took us on an insightful tour of their facility to demonstrate how the team’s research is advancing innovations for sustainable food systems.
