As the weather gets colder, it’s essential to maintain clean and safe environments in the colder months! ❄️ A great way to do this is to organize a fall cleanup in your community. Here are some ways to do this: 🍁Plan and organize a date for volunteers to gather and clean up certain areas of your community. 🍁Gather supplies and arrange for dumpsters to be present. 🍁Recruit volunteers, and then divide and conquer! 🍁Provide water and snacks for your volunteers. 🍁Take the opportunity to educate participants about the importance of community cleanup. Together, we can make a positive impact in our neighborhoods!

Conserve Utah Valley is a charity organization that is working hard to protect Utah Lake and Great Salt Lake. Their initiative "Grow the Flow Utah" is focused on increasing the water level in Great Salt Lake which we all know has severely diminished. If you live in Utah, recreate in Utah, or are passionate about environmental sustainability. I encourage you to sign up for their newsletter and get more involved with protecting the lakes that create the Greatest Snow on Earth! Two easy ways to help grow the flow in Utah are: 1. Xeriscaping our lawns to match our natural landscape. 2. Changing the perception of green grass lawns to be seasonal (June, July, August). many Utahns water excessively from last frost to first frost (May through October) which wastes a lot of water. https://lnkd.in/gA9rC34F

This week's #KinderCharacterChallenge: Pick Up Litter The last day of this week, Saturday, September 16, is National Clean Up Day, aimed at reducing litter and cleaning up green spaces. How many times a day do you see litter - on the sidewalk or along the highway? What can you do this week to help the Clean Up effort? Remember to be careful along roadways and protect your hands from germs and broken glass. For me, I have to go no further than my front yard. Corner lots seem to attract more trash. Is there a senior citizen in your family or neighborhood who has a similar problem that you could help with this week? Is this the year that you convince your workplace or organization to Adopt-A-Highway for litter control? The program, run by the Ohio Department of Transportation, allows volunteer groups to adopt a two-mile section or an interchange along a state, federal, or interstate route, free of cost. Adopt-A-Highway volunteers pick up an average of 25,000 bags of litter each year, saving taxpayers $280,000. #CharacterStartsWithMe #RAK #PositiveVibes

Since 2017, we have collected just under 30,000 pounds of trash from local beaches, preventing it from entering the Gulf of Mexico. This has not come easily. We have had over 6,000 volunteers, accumulating over 180,000 hours. These cleanups have primarily taken place in the Tampa Bay area along the Gulf Coast. We are looking to expand from Coast to Coast. #GivingTuesday https://lnkd.in/eYVJF8B

This kind of circularity should be obvious.
If you work or live by a University, you know how Move Out can kind of break your heart. But this year we did things differently… With the help of a great team of students and campus community volunteers, this is ALL THE STUFF we saved from landfill at Illinois State University Move Out this year! Everything will be stored, sorted, and cleaned over the summer - then will be given back to incoming students for free during Summer Preview & at our big Front Yard Free Cycle this fall. This was one heavy lift: months of planning, then 10 straight days of collecting, transporting, and unloading moving trucks. (and of course some dumpster diving) We are exhausted, sore, and a little bruised up…but we did it! *Not seen: 600 mattress toppers delivered to Kern Mattress for recycling into upholstery filler, hundreds of pounds of food delivered to the School Street Food Pantry, numerous tarps & sleeping bags dropped off at Home Sweet Home Mission homeless shelter, and about 20 pairs of crutches given to LIFE CIL.

Litter costs money. In 2022, litter cleanup cost the Missouri Department of Transportation $7.7 million and is projected to cost $9 million in 2023. This cost affects all Missourians. Litter also affects organizations such as businesses, city councils, local communities, and educational facilities, making the money used for litter clean-up not available for more positive use in the community. Impact on Wildlife: Litter can have a negative impact on both land and water-dwelling wildlife. Animals can ingest inedible materials, such as plastic packaging and cigarette butts. Insufficient quantities, these materials may poison the animal or cause it to starve by blocking its intestinal tract. We thank all those who have spent time to keep our community clean, healthy, and happy! Volunteer today! Interested in getting involved with our City government? There are opportunities for folks of any age or ability to get involved just once or to join an ongoing program. Volunteering is a rewarding way to serve your city, meet new people, have fun, and learn something new! www.como.gov/volunteer/ 𝗧𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗸 𝗱𝗶𝗳𝗳𝗲𝗿𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗹𝘆. 𝗧𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗸 𝘀𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗯𝗹𝘆.
