Went over surgical airway techniques today, focusing specifically on cricothyrotomy. I discussed the indications, contraindications, and the step-by-step procedure, emphasizing the importance of identifying anatomical landmarks such as the cricothyroid membrane. I also covered various methods, including both the needle and surgical approaches, and reviewed potential complications and their management. This comprehensive overview underscored the critical role of cricothyrotomy in emergency airway management, particularly in situations where intubation is not feasible. I do not do this for anyone else. But to start to create habits early into my career so I never become complacent. I will do this by continuously refining my knowledge and skills. I aim to be confident and perform at my best when the time comes.

This Monday's post is hopefully something to help you get off the fence and get your goals set for next year. I personally feel that the general acceptance of mediocrity will be the downfall of our culture. I do not want a mediocre Brain Surgeon, Pilot, Chef or Tailor just because someone feels they should have a "fair chance" in one of those positions. Without incentive and reward to achieve greatness, there will be none. Patrick Mahomes makes $52.7 MILLION per year not counting bonuses and endorsements. That's almost $145,000 every single day.... No, I don't begrudge him for that as he has proven to be one of the best at what he does. But why do we accept this as reasonable for someone who literally plays a game, but we don't accept it for ourselves in our professional lives? Is he a great swimmer, or tennis player? I have no idea. Don't concentrate on your weaknesses to become average at those skills, but concentrate on your strengths to become exceptional at those skills that you already are good at. Would a brain surgeon practice Dermatology to become "more well rounded"? That would be ridiculous. So, set goals that work on your strengths and stretch you to become the elite. Don't allow yourself to be average at anything. Here is wishing you all the best 2024 possible!
