This move, if successful, could lead to a significant reduction in the demand for new glass spirits bottles by Diageo. They are to reuse the bottles by refilling with a dedicated collection service in place. These bottles are coated with plastic to increase its trippage to very high levels and maintain appearance. It’s a localised trial right now but could spread worldwide since glass accounts for around 20% of Diageo’s carbon emissions in their supply chain. It is being tested in the bar and pub sector but I’d expect it would be extended as far as they can if it proves successful in reducing their carbon footprint. In response, let’s continue all our decarbonisation efforts to make one-trip glass containers cost-competitive and carbon neutral 😀. No plastic required!

Our portfolio company, ecoSPIRITS, is partnering with Diageo to help the beverage giant explore the viability of reusable packaging and distribution. Together with ecoSPIRITS, Diageo will offer Gordon’s gin, Captain Morgan rum and Smirnoff vodka in refillable 4.5-liter vessels across 18 markets over the next three years. Each ecoSPIRITS "ecoTOTE" is a 4.5 liter glass bottle encased in plastic with an inner aluminum frame. Over its lifetime, one ecoTOTE can help replace 900 of the typical 750-milliliter glass bottles normally used by restaurants and bars. The company estimates its totes have a 60 to 90% lower CO2 footprint than traditional bar bottles. I was at Starbucks after a very long time despite the coffee tasting awful as usual, I was pretty surprised they have now switched to reusable mugs for dine-in orders. It's great to see a change in an industry-leading coffee chain. Hope this will strategy will also be implemented in other major coffee chains, rather than greenwashing switch to "bio-degradable" cups, which in real life do not bio-degrade.
