Fantastic news from Sriharikota on the successful launch of Agnibaan - India's first 3D-printed rocket and India's first semi-cryogenic engine. The technical details are impressive, and I confess to being transfixed by the 3D printing when I had the chance to see it at work, there's another impressive dimension. What is also worth celebration and emulation is the partnership between start-ups, academia and government exemplified by how the great teams from Indian Institute of Technology, Madras, IITM Incubation Cell, IIT Madras Research Park (IITMRP) and Kerala Startup Mission joined hands with the AgniKul Cosmos. Not just kul, agni kul... We need more partnerships like this for India to increase R&D spending from the current levels of ~0.7% of GDP and move it closer to industrial nations' averages of ~1.6%, and private sector share in this from 40% up to 70%. While this will benefit all sectors, from a climate change perspective, it creates the conditions for India to develop the innovations that will help the economy grow ambitiously but without a linear growth in emissions. What is a Technical Textile? "Technical textiles" are specially designed textiles with specific properties for industrial, medical, automotive, and aerospace uses, unlike regular fabrics. They offer qualities like strength, durability, flame and chemical resistance, catering to diverse industry needs. The Ministry of Textiles has given its endorsement to a program called "GREAT." This initiative is geared towards extending financial grants to individuals and startups engaged in the realm of technical textiles. These grants, which can reach amounts as high as Rs 50 lakh, are intended to cover a span of up to 18 months. Nonetheless, the stipulation set by the government is that these startups must have been incorporated within a time frame of five years or less. I am questioning my own thoughts that I shared 2 days back. The mind is a tricky thing. You learn something new and after some time you start questioning it. 2 days back I learned about future opportunities in the technical textile sector and I shared my insights about it. I kept on thinking as I did not want to miss this bus. But when I dug dipper into it I realised major exporters are giants like Reliance Industries, Arvind Ltd, Welspun Ltd and Bombay Dyeing. They are giant institutions in itself with enough resources in R&D and supply chain. It's a no brainer that majority of such opportunities will be grabbed by these companies. BUT, How MSME sector will get benefitted? opportunities are immense but by the time it reaches to the bottom, every drop of juice is already squeezed by these giants. The project will be worth ₹94.85 crore/£9million/£11 The proposed project aimed at boosting the production of the valuable allotrope of carbon would mark a new chapter of innovation in the country’s technological field, said Alkesh Kumar Sharma, Secretary, Ministry of Electronics & IT. “Our companies should strive to make best advantage out of today’s environment that focuses on electronics and information technology. As innovation and geniuses form crucial to the system, graphene has become a thoroughly futuristic product,” he noted at the launch of a Graphene Aurora programme after a visit to Maker Village, which is the country’s largest electronic hardware incubator and ESDM facility. Mr. Sharma said Maker Village has set a model for other states in electronics incubation. Suman Billa, principal secretary to the State government (Industries & NORKA), said the State has selected 22 industrial sectors suiting its ecosystem. “As we work on strengthening them, the focus will be on electronics and IT companies. We will promote projects that integrate academic research that can be of practical use,” he said. State IT Secretary Rathan U. Kelkar said Kerala was set to complete an array of startup-boosting projects in the next five years. “The industrial sector is earning excellent support from the IT sector,” he pointed out. Kerala Digital University Vice-Chancellor Saji Gopinath said the 2016-founded Maker Village initially envisaged the incubation of 40 start-ups, but overshot the target by taking it to 140 Part of India’s investment in Graphene development. Tata Steel has been expanding it New Materials Business division, focussing on graphene, composites and ceramics. In FY 2020-21, Tata Steel commissioned a 100 tonne per annum integrated Graphene manufacturing plant, one among few large single-unit graphene production facilities in the world. Graphene-doped products and graphene-coated products which can be used in diverse sectors such as materials handling, textiles, and packaging, among others, are currently being tested and are in different stages of commercialisation. Revenue from new materials will double to about ₹600 crore this year as demand grows mainly for graphene, fibre reinforced polymers and medical materials. Going ahead, each of these products will have a turnover of ₹4,000 crore. $500 million. In five years, the new material business will be worth $1 billion
