Most of you know that I volunteer as the Vice Chair of the Board for the Horizons at The Foote School program in New Haven, CT which is an immersive academic and enrichment program serving over 160 New Haven Public Students (grades K-8 with a newer High School Mentorship Program to reach the 9-12 kiddos as well) each year with year-round programming that is anchored around its robust summer component. We are a largely privately funded program that provides this opportunity free of charge to families and if you are looking for ways to help advance equity in education, see our support page for ways you can help us with our work: https://lnkd.in/eFskdnb7 Today, I had the privilege of not only presenting but seeing the fruits of my organizing a special panel of friends for our “Career Day Chat” for the middle school class. With the help of my friends Elijah Hampton, James Williams, Willie Henriquez, and Jordan Blatche, among the five of us, we presented a multifaceted group of professionals who are business owners, musicians, real estate investors, accountants, serial entrepreneurs, correctional officers, and attorneys for career day. These gentlemen showed up in such a real way and listening to them speak I only became more inspired and grateful to have these guys in my circle. The tough middle school crowd loved them as we shared jokes and laughs and thoughtful and engaging follow-up questions. Such a special moment was shared today, and I’m just moved to have been able to witness it. So much was talked about but some of the messages we shared were: - “You are only as good as the company you keep.” - “Model what you need.” - “Mistakes will happen, but do your best to not make the mistakes that you can’t make a comeback from.” - “Ask for help and seek mentorship.” - “Make a covenant to be the best version of yourself that you can be.” - “There is more than one way to be successful. With that, school may not be the path for you, but all of us need to develop a game plan for success.” - “Shutup and work – not everything you must do you will like.” #TeamDestined4Greatness 🙌🏾

We’re absolutely sure that Baron R. Davis, Ph.D.’s keynotes at ASU GSV Summit this week will get people thinking. And we say that because his recent op-ed for EdPost—co-authored with Institute for Education Innovation CEO and Founder Doug Roberts—got *us* thinking about what’s behind the exodus of #superintendents and what education leaders can do about it. https://lnkd.in/eEZqHqTH   It’s an honor to work with Dr. Davis, an award-winning #education #leader, former superintendent and high school principal, and CEO and founder of The Noegenesis Group.   In the piece titled “Support Superintendents: Build a Culture of Trust and Stop Turnover, they write, “As devastating as the past four years have been for superintendents, hope is on the horizon. To create meaningful, long-lasting change, it will require a collective effort from communities, educators, and board members.”   They include three key steps for ending the discord and upheaval: 1. Revisit the power of diversity, equity, and inclusion #DEI 2. Bring back bipartisanship to school boards 3. Support and uplift women and leaders of color   Their conclusion: “We’re at a critical crossroads. Political discourse must take a backseat to communication, empathy, and trust to create a culture of respect that flows throughout the district.”   #Education #K12 #ThoughtLeadership #Leaders  

Let's talk about the true scope of independent school competition. Families are considering various options, including public schools, charter schools, and online education. So what should you do? Angela emphasized the importance of broadening your focus to understand all the options families evaluate. Put yourself in their shoes to understand their mindsets. Start with questions like: What are their values? What are their needs? Doing so lets you strategically position your school to stand out in a crowded market. Over the past few weeks, I’ve been connecting with EdTech founders, discussing ways to leverage technology to improve educational outcomes. These conversations brought me back to my teenage years when I was a middle and high school student in Kingstree, SC. If you know anything about Kingstree, then you know its population is around 3,000, and it is located in the poorest county in South Carolina (Williamsburg County). Additionally, according to US News, 100% of students at Kingstree Senior High School are economically disadvantaged. Compared to my educational experience in Kingstree, my Miami public school education was that of Phillip Exeter’s. In Miami, we had smartboards in elementary school, which is one of my earliest memories of innovative education technology, and I competed in several math and science competitions. I even had chance to present scientific findings at Kennedy Space Center back in the sixth grade. When I arrived in Kingstree, my Miami public school education allowed me to perform light years ahead of my peers. However, as I reflect on those years, I now realize Kingstree is the living embodiment of the saying, “Talent is somewhat evenly distributed but opportunity is not.” During my time in the “country,” I met some of the smartest people in the world, such as Shadi McFadden Tyson and Shawn Fulmore to name a few. Education technology can be somewhat of an equalizer, providing economically disadvantaged students with the resources to compete at a high level and learn advanced concepts, helping students overcome educational hurdles due to lack of educational infrastructure and opportunity. EdTech is a sector where you can do good and do well, aligning your self-interest with a true north star. That Time I Said 'Yes' to Starting a School Over Coffee 15 years ago, I met Robert Reffkin. Over coffee, Robert proposed an idea I wasn’t expecting: "Let's start a school!" We discussed the potential to improve educational  outcomes in the Bronx through a free,  high-quality public charter school. I was excited about the opportunity and also a  bit nervous about the complexities of  opening a school. I started researching charter schools and partnering  with Success Academy Charter Schools, impressed  by their mission and results. Robert was a driving force behind this initiative;  he led the effort masterfully identifying the  founding team we needed and bringing  in Success Academy. We had an incredibly talented and diverse group  of founding trustees to guide our vision and  partnership with Success Academy. The process required significant fundraising and  navigating NYC regulations, but Success Academy  ensured a smooth process. In 2010, less than 2 years after meeting Robert,  Bronx 1 Elementary opened with its first  Kindergarten and 1st-grade classes. Now, it's incredible to see the school's impact on  thousands of students. In 2016, it received a National Blue Ribbon Award  for academic excellence! Each time I visit,  I'm reminded of the tremendous potential  of students and the lifelong impact  of high-quality education. In reality, I played a small role in helping to bring  the school to life – but it had a pivotal impact on  me far greater than I imagined. It deepened my understanding of the education  system, and exposed me to countless incredible  people, opportunities, and moments that I cherish.
