Let's knock down some misconceptions about #XR #productions. When our team set out to invent the world's first real-time multi-camera XR broadcast driven by a game engine (shoutout #unrealengine ) for The International 11, it was "crazy"...that is, until we delivered it, then it was "brilliant" And, it's also highly accessible and beneficial for productions and applications of all shapes and sizes. Misconception #1. "It's expensive and inaccessible": Yeah, high-end setups exist, but more affordable user-friendly XR tools have emerged, making it accessible for smaller productions. #unrealengine5 #pixotope Misconception #2. "It's just about spectacle": While visually impressive, XR is valuable for more than just wowing audiences. It enhances storytelling, provides remote experts with immersive access to sites, or even offers training simulations in real-time. Misconception #3. "It's too complicated to execute live": Unlike movies, live XR can't be heavily edited, but with planning and rehearsals we can ensure seamless integration of XR elements with the live environment and performance. Misconception #4. "It's only for tech-savvy audiences": Engaging XR experiences are enjoyable for anyone, regardless of their technical knowledge. The focus should always be on clear storytelling and intuitive interaction. I couldn’t be at MuseumNext live this year, but that didn’t stop me from tuning in to watch the talks on-demand this week. I think I just found my favorite moment of the entire show. After showing his team's incredible work bringing Rembrandt’s The Night Watch to life online, Peter Gorgels was asked how the Rijksmuseum could justify their spend on digital projects like these. His answer was perfect. “We have 2.5-3 million visitors every year, but there are 8 billion people in the world. We want to reach those people and present us as the home of the Dutch Masters.” The presenter wasn’t buying it. “Presumably, what you’re looking for is actual people coming through your actual doors and spending actual money in your real museum … Those 8 billion people aren’t forking out money to buy a ticket, so equating a digital visitor with a real visitor must be quite a challenge.” Peter didn’t back down: “It has a lot of marketing value, which brings money to us. We also have a lot of sponsors and funding partners and we do a lot of these experiences with them.” His answer hints at a different kind of model for museums, where delivering experiences and growing reach is just as important a target as bringing visitors in the front door. Here are a few reasons why it works: 🤝 When curatorial and marketing work together on museum content they can unlock more budget for innovative projects. 🌱 When curatorial content is untethered to the gallery and shared online for free it can be used to grow audiences, not just engage existing ones. 💸 When your content is good enough to succeed in the attention economy you can explore new ways of generating income (sponsorships, digital memberships, etc.) that may be more sustainable than selling coffee, gifts, and one-time tickets.
