How do we build a better future for the collaboration between AI and artists? A few thought starters from the #NYtechweek fireside chat yesterday at Morrison & Foerster featuring Anna Tumadottir, CEO of Creative Commons, and Julia Enthoven, Co-founder and CEO of Kapwing: -Yes! There’s hope. More time and nuance is a must. As we know, there are many implications. The concern is how quickly things are moving. -The future of copyright should not be the same as the future of creativity and licensing. -Art is inherently human — we are necessary for the continued evolution and innovation of art and storytelling. AI images may work to jazz up a post, but do they make you feel something real? (You tell me — wdyt?) -Artists should be able to opt-out of allowing AI to train on their work. (yes!) -“Look-alike/sound-alike” searches shouldn’t be allowed if the artist hasn’t consented. -Julia shared Tess.Design, now in Beta, which has a goal of creating a healthy, consensual ecosystem that gives back to the artist and allows for AI image generation. For those asking about our take on AI and film, some initial thoughts below - Over the past couple months I have spent time with a variety of AI pioneers, film producers, and financing partners, discussing the short and long term effects AI could have on our industry as a whole. Not surprisingly, no one can predict the future. Many conversations ended in comparisons to the industrial revolution, while others focused on harnessing the power of AI to make your wildest creative dreams a reality. Regardless of your personal perspective, it is clear that a major paradigm shift is on the horizon for anyone working in a creative industry. Many of you have probably seen polarizing and sometimes heated conversations online regarding the use of AI in brand advertising. The opposing perspectives both have merit, and I’m sure our views will continue to evolve in the coming months and years. For now, at Stept Studios, we are embracing certain AI tools to help our team ideate and concept efficiently, which has been a really fun process. We are generally not using these tools for public facing client work at this time. We are hyper aware of not cannibalizing the creative integrity of the artists get inspiration from. Our current assumption is that AI is likely gathering influence from existing art that is viewable online, meaning the personal fingerprint of artists is technically being used without consent. We want to be careful to not borrow or discount their valuable portfolio's of work. I am personally obsessed with the craft of film, photography and creative development. I am optimistic that artists and AI engines can live in harmony, but in the short term, we need to tread carefully as we break new ground. We can't ignore the future, but we also need to be respectful of the past and the amazing people who breathe human life into this industry every day. We are all excited to see what the next couple years will bring, and hopefully that involves a lot of 16mm and 35mm film still :)

We've Unlocked a New Era in Video Production with AI Power... 🔥 I'm thrilled to unveil a project that's been a labor of love and innovation for our team over the last 6 months. Under the guidance of our AI Captain, Vince Buyssens (of Starhaven), and the extraordinary efforts of our creative crew, we bring you Welcome to Latent Land. There's a common belief that generative AI could strip away our creative control, but let me assure you, this project demanded more artistic decision-making than any other project I've been part of. Whether you appreciate the final creation is - very honestly - secondary. The essence of this project lies in navigating through the thousands of tools that emerged in the early months of 2023, identifying those suitable for a creative video production process, ... utilize them to their fullest potential within self-imposed boundaries, such as shooting in a studio, employing actors, and ensuring that at least one shot uses classic green screen technology. This project is also about making sure we don't miss the (hyper-fast) Ai-train, and recognizing that, even halfway through the process, we were indeed outdated. It's about carefully selecting the appropriate images and orchestrating these tools to work in harmony, not only with each other but also alongside more traditional software like the Adobe suite. It's a journey of discovery, constant revision, and relentless testing. At its core, it's about the people behind the process. #R&D The journey has been a deeply educational one, enlightening each of us involved in every stage of production. It's a revealing look at the hurdles we overcame and offers a unique perspective where the creation process is as (or even more) valuable as the final product itself.
