I have a milestone to celebrate: I'm grateful to now have 3,000 people following me and my Enapter stories! Fortunately, there are still a lot of exciting things ahead of us: Once again, a big thank you to everyone for taking time to read along and engage with my musings. I don’t take it for granted. Particularly after 20 years in the automotive and consulting industries, I’m very delighted to see a growing global community with an interest in green hydrogen and clean technologies. This is a great signal for the energy transition. I only started as Enapter’s CEO in July 2023. Since then, we have achieved a lot together: - Significantly increasing order backlog to around €27m - Launching our new #AEM Flex 120 electrolyser in September - Delivering the first commercial unit just a few weeks later for an industrial project - Starting production of our second & third MW-sized AEM Nexus 1000 electrolysers - Selling various units of our multi-core electrolyser products - Commissioning 30 AEM Electrolysers for an H2 refuelling station in Tokyo  - Deploying many more AEM EL 4 across the globe in all imaginable green hydrogen use cases For me, the journey has just begun. There are many exciting projects ahead of us – from kW scale to the MW range. One of my new year's resolutions is to make this channel even better and more relevant for you. 🎉Congratulations to our member Johnson Matthey who has secured a deal with DG Fuels to set up its first sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) plant. The fuel has been developed in collaboration with bp’s co-Fischer Tropsch (FT) CANS™ technology. DG Fuels has already secured offtake agreements with Delta Air Lines and Air France-KLM and has a strategic partnership with Airbus to scale up the use of SAF globally. The plant would be the largest deployment of FT CANS to date, seven times larger than any previously announced project using this technology. The fuel at the Louisiana plant is expected to be produced from waste biomass. DG Fuels is projected to purchase around $120 million of sugar cane waste annually, a third of which is planned to be purchased from St. James Parish farmers. JM and bp’s FT CANS technology converts the synthesis gas derived from this biomass to synthetic crude, which is then further processed to produce the synthetic kerosene that is then blended with conventional jet fuel to produce SAF. #sustainableaviation #cleantech Find out more: https://lnkd.in/eP4vjsES

So encouraging that leading chemical companies are investing in the electrification of steam crackers for the production of ethylene. Further policies that make those projects bankable will be crucial for their later development at scale. How to finance these projects is a key question for CFOs and treasurers. NEWS: The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE)’s DOE Office of Clean Energy Demonstrations has announced that LanzaTech and our partner Technip Energies have been selected to receive up to a $200 million award to support our Project SECURE, which will capture CO2 emissions from traditional ethylene crackers and transform them into sustainable ethylene production facilities. Traditional ethylene production is one of the largest sources of emissions across the chemical industry, generating 553 million tonnes of CO2 emissions per year, and remains one of the most challenging processes to decarbonize. Our integrated solution has significant replication potential for ethylene crackers worldwide, meaning we have an opportunity to sustainably meet the global demand for ethylene while reducing global carbon emissions. The ethylene market is expected to be worth $200 billion by 2030, with annual global demand of more than 231 million tons. Ethylene is often called the “world most important chemical” due to its widespread use in critical industries. It is a building block for thousands of chemicals and materials, including plastics, detergents, and coatings for medical purposes and food packaging. Ethylene is also the first intermediate in producing sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) from ethanol in LanzaJet’s Alcohol-to-Jet process, so this commercial demonstration is a critical step in scaling the production of SAF from CO2. This funding will accelerate the expansion of our commercial-scale carbon recycling technology in the U.S., and is a major milestone on our journey to create a circular carbon economy. Not only is the DOE’s IDP advancing the U.S. energy transition but also they are focusing on promoting opportunities to create new jobs and strengthen local communities. 𝗘𝘅𝗰𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮𝗱𝘃𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀 𝗶𝗻 𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗵𝘆𝗱𝗿𝗼𝗴𝗲𝗻 𝗲𝗻𝗴𝗶𝗻𝗲 Schuttevaer recently interviewed our sales manager Ed Hes about our innovative hydrogen engine development. At NPS Driven, we've made great progress in creating hydrogen-powered engines as an alternative to traditional diesel engines. As part of the Green Transport Delta Hydrogen (GTD-H) project, and in collaboration with TNO, we're adapting diesel engines to run on hydrogen – and the results are promising. Our hydrogen engine, showcased for the first time at the Maritime Industry Fair in Gorinchem, is set to begin field testing, marking a major step forward for the future of inland shipping. If anyone had any doubts that the US is serious about capturing the commercial opportunities from industrial carbon capture and use they should look at the support the US Department for Energy has provided to 33 projects through its Industrial Demonstrations Program. #LanzaTech with #Technip Energies is one recipient with the award of up to $200 million to support Project SECURE, this will capture CO2 emissions from traditional ethylene crackers and transform them into sustainable ethylene. Ethylene is the world's most important chemical but production through cracking produces over 500Mt of CO2. By capturing and recycling the CO2 pollution both demand for fossil feedstock to the cracker is reduced and the recycled carbon that is captured can be reused and stored in the huge range of products made from ethylene, like plastics. This project will demonstrate the feasibility of the technology that could then be rolled out globally to around 150 more steam crackers using the same technology. There are no silver bullets to achieve net zero, particularly in hard to abate industrial sectors, but a diverse range of carbon capture and utilisation solutions have a key role to play. The European Commission's recent Industrial Carbon Management Communication recognised this, targeting by 2050 that 45% of the 450Mt of carbon captured from hard to abate sectors like steel will be used in sectors like chemicals that will always need carbon. But whilst the Commission is supportive in a Communication it also continues to table regulations that block CCU projects being built. For example: the sunset clause on the use of fossil carbon after 2035/40; and requiring companies capturing carbon to pay for a carbon credit if it's not permanently stored - unlike virgin fossil feedstock! The US is adopting a less idealistic, more pragmatic solution to reducing emissions in hard to abate sectors. The EU could learn a lesson from what's happening in the States and ask why there are so few CCU facilities today in the EU? There's a global innovation race driven by the climate crisis that Europe cannot afford to lose. The US funding is driving innovation there and Europe runs the risk of being a buyer not creator of solutions. #CO2ValueEurope #LanzaTech
