Including more recycled aluminium in industrial products will not only reduce the overall environmental impact of these processes, but will also make a strategically important contribution to Europe's aluminium supply. So how can we advance and optimise recycling practices and establish a robust circular materials system? The 4pm session in SALEMA's final event on 21 March will show how our partners from University of Liège and Groupe Comet have improved end-of-life aluminium scrap sorting with new algorithms directing the actions of a line of robots to select specific pieces from a conveyor belt. Get to know us: Research Department "Application and Demonstration" Developing industry-related circular products requires a prior circular assessment of existing products. In addition to high economic efficiency and a long service life, the products should primarily be easily repairable and recyclable, and their materials should be degradable in the environment if required. We represent a broad knowledge of the property relationship of processes in the transformation of polymers as well as the promotion of interdisciplinary cooperation and exchange on the topic of "circular products". Our core competence is the holistic system analysis and simulation from linear to circular products by applying R-strategies and integrating multi-stakeholder perspectives and end-customer requirements into material and product development processes. The plastics industry in transition – a chance or a setback?   Due to the increasing awareness of the reuse of chemically manufactured products such as #polymers and regulations such as the EU Green Deal Law, targets have been set that, compared with the current supply chains and processes, are seen as hurdles at the first look. The reason for this is increasing material fluctuations when the admixture of recycled material exceeds a certain level. In particular, the use of post-consumer material, i.e. material that each individual throws into the bin every day creates most of the headache - in Germany we are talking about material out of the yellow bag. The history of this material is somehow unknown, so that higher material fluctuations during production are to be expected compared to today's standards. This fact for some polymer types has already been confirmed by several studies. However, this also offers great opportunities to place new technologies alongside a positive footprint in terms of sustainability. Existing and already used technologies can be iteratively improved or new disruptive solutions can support the market while addressing these challenges. One of these solutions is sensXPERT - Optimizing Plastics Manufacturing Digital Mold. By using smart sensor technology in the mold, material science, machine parameters and artificial intelligence, material fluctuations during component production can be detected and compensated for in real time, leading to a reduction in scrap and the elimination of safety times. The end result is increased throughput with maximum security and a financial benefit that allows a rapid return on investment of days to several weeks. Our infrastructure: composite materials containing plastic, for example electronic scrap, composite materials, or shredder fractions, are thermochemically recycled. The system has an innovative, patented heat exchanger technology and thus allows an optimal heat input into the input material. The capacity of the reactors ranges from pilot plant scale (0.5 kg/h) to demonstration scale (70 kg/h). The plant is located at the Fraunhofer UMSICHT branch in Sulzbach-Rosenberg and is used by our "Advanced Recycling" research department.
