In 1992, my senior design project was a Collision Avoidance Vehicle (CAV) in the form of a remote control car. Sit the car in the middle of a room and it would never hit a wall, table, chair, etc. It was a tiny rendition of an #autonomous vehicle. Now, we are seeing how these vehicles are being produced and how they may be used in society. Yet, the process of creating such a vehicle is complex. There are varying levels of automation and #safety is something many are apprehensive about. Which is smart – safety, reliability, infrastructure, legal frameworks, and #datasecurity are all valid areas that continue to be addressed. The way the #automotiveindustry adjusts around these areas will be critical. #autonomousvehicles

To ensure they can unfold their full potential, however, their surroundings must be ideally prepared for mixed traffic with autonomous vehicles and human workers. One simple but effective solution to achieve this: the 360-degree safety mirror. Placed in key areas in the warehouse and equipped with additional warning lights, these auxiliaries are central to ensuring smooth material flow in the busy environment of the Oechsler plant. At Chassis Autonomy, we strive to disrupt the status quo and deliver true fail-operational actuation to enable a sustainable and safe future for mobility, ensuring fewer road traffic accidents and safer roads for pedestrians. Our steer-by-wire systems are designed specifically for use in fully autonomous (and highly automated) vehicles, with redundant actuation to ensure continued operation even in the event of a system fault or failure. This is a fundamental difference to conventional steering systems that have no redundancy and systems that therefore require the vehicle to perform a dangerous stop-in-lane manoeuvre, in the event of a system fault. This steer-by-wire advantage is an important innovation in safety critical actuation, especially when reflecting on the risks that system failures pose in human driven vehicles. With 1.3 million people tragically lost to road traffic accidents each year, it is important to implement measures that can move these statistics in the opposite direction. Alongside the other benefits of steer-by-wire systems such as variable steering ratios, vehicle packaging and interior design benefits, the improvements to safety will ensure the long-term prosperity of the next stage of mobility. #sbw #futureofmobility #safety #autonomous
