Why does a manufacturing company need certified? Working in quality now for 7 months give or take, I’d like to thank several of my team members who have lots of experience within quality to answer my questions. Thanks Melanie Lees, Mark Fiest, Dave Ashby, Karine Lima and Marcel Köhler to name a few, and the quality managers from our plants. But really why do we need to be certified? A certification is acquired from an audit from a third party to verify your quality systems among other things. There are lots of different standards that exist that are required by a customer in order to do business with them. It is a large part of Quality teams within manufacturing to ensure they maintain these certifications so that your company can continue to do business with certain customers. Supplier quality management has been the topic of keen interest by manufacturers around the globe. Main reason for this is not the lack of trust between manufacturers and suppliers but the inability of manufacturers to extend their quality processes across their value chain. In the automotive segment this gap is even more pronounced since manufacturers tend to source a bulk of parts due to sub-system level specialization, scale efficiencies and operational flexibility. Though suppliers strive to meet the quality standards specified by their customers, but since the quality processes of the two organization are disjointed, this tends to make continous improvement process nearly impossible. Digitalization has opened newer possibilities by extending quality processes of manufacturers to their wider eco-system of suppliers, thus driving efficiencies and improving quality of their end product.
