This #EarthMonth2024 is the perfect time to reflect on the progress made at #COP28 and what we can expect at this year’s #COP29. I’m pleased to share a short conversation I had with my colleague Stanley E. Porter on some of the key takeaways from COP, including the commitments made to global equity and the importance of finance, nature, and the climate-health nexus. While there were many encouraging developments on carbon markets at COP28, the overall negotiations fell short of the mark. Achieving Paris Goals requires all flows of capital to be mobilized. The lack of agreement on Article 6 makes this much harder. For the market to fully develop in the next two years as the UN and governments have called for, policymakers can draw on the foundational work of the VCMI and The Integrity Council for the Voluntary Carbon Market (ICVCM) to accelerate the transparency and integrity agenda, developing high-integrity VCM and Article 6 markets that deliver the finance that makes ambitious global action possible. #cop28 #cop28uae

“Identify and capture the emerging value creation opportunity”. #COP28 Besides making the math work, it is understanding that sustainability can shift beyond a factor in risk mitigation to become a source of competitive advantage. The challenge is how to harness it into a strategy that supports incremental change and can rise above path dependencies and legacy systems.

With #COP28 already 5 months behind us, this can only mean one thing: #SB60 starts today ✨ 𝗦𝗕𝟲𝟬 - 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁❓: From June 3rd - June 13th the 60th session of negotiations of the Subsidiary Body for Scientific and Technological Advice and the Subsidiary Body for Implementation of the UNFCCC [1] is happening in Bonn. The meetings are key for technical negotiations and for defining the agenda for COP29 [2]. 3️⃣ 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗺𝗼𝘀𝘁 𝗶𝗺𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗮𝗻𝘁 𝘁𝗼𝗽𝗶𝗰𝘀 𝗮𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝘆𝗲𝗮𝗿𝘀 𝗦𝗕: 𝟭. 𝗖𝗹𝗶𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗙𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲: There are several questions that need to be defined regarding the NCQGs [3]. These questions contain i.a. who the contributors will be contributors and how the process will be designed. Also there are general questions on the sources of public climate finance. 𝟮. 𝗝𝘂𝘀𝘁 𝗧𝗿𝗮𝗻𝘀𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻: At COP27 parties agreed to create a Just Transition Work Program, highlighting (i.a.) the importance of climate justice, international cooperation, social dialogue and labour rights. Right before Bonn the first of the two annual dialogues kicked-off. 𝟯. 𝗙𝗼𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗹 𝗙𝘂𝗲𝗹𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 & 𝗡𝗗𝗖𝘀 [4]: At COP28 a firely debate emerged around phasing out of fossile fuels. While most observers urged for "phasing out" fossil-fuels, the parties in the end - at least - agreed on "transitioning away from fossil fuels". While parties are preparing to release their NDCs, in Bonn discussions will surely include the question to what they'll capture fossil fuels. I am excited!
