Evinced announced a draft set of Mobile Content Accessibility Guidelines (MCAG) at CSUN: https://lnkd.in/gT2WQ_cA This is not an attempt to replace the W3C's role in creating standards, but rather an attempt to kickstart the work on mobile. I'm hopeful that MCAG combined with Jan Jaap de Groot's appointment as facilitator of the Mobile Accessibility Task Force (MATF) will help accelerate progress in mobile accessibility guidance. There are a lot of good things in MCAG: - MCAG maps to the current Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) and pulls in important concepts from the draft 3.0 standard around outcomes for users. - MCAG proposes impact ranges for failures, for example, a smaller contrast fail has less impact than a large contrast fail. - MCAG notes dependencies, for example, if the app doesn't support enlarging text then testing if enlarged text is legible isn't necessary. - MCAG references other native app guidelines from Apple, Android, and more consolidating them in one location. - Evinced hasn't provided a guide to understanding the guidelines in depth similar to what W3C provides for WCAG. Instead, they hope to provide code samples. I've found this is critical to mobile devs because there are fewer tutorials for app accessibility than web and because the code can vary significantly based on the framework you use. - MCAG adds "best practices" that benefit usability, but wouldn't be compliance failures. Most automated accessibility testing tools also include best practices. - MCAG uses language that I find simpler and clearer than WCAG. All in all, I'm impressed and mobile-specific guidance is long overdue. The number of people globally who cannot use websites because the sites don't meet accessibility standards or legislation "adds up to nearly the population of India or China, according to World Health Organization (WHO) data," Don Fluckinger of TechTarget says. Creating and maintaining accessible websites is the ethical thing to do and protects organizations against legal issues.
