You would have heard about the Bavarian tradition of “weißwurstfrühstück”: white sausage breakfast, but have you ever heard of “Monatsabschluss-weißwurstfrühstück”: month-end white sausage breakfast? It is a mouthful, literally and figuratively, but it is also a delicious way to celebrate the end of the month at modelwise. 😋 Every month-end, we gather at our office in Munich or join online, usually before noon as with the tradition (and yes, we make sure there is something for everyone, including our plant-powered pals. 🌱), and share what happened in our professional or personal lives. It is a fun and productive way to wrap up the month and start the next one. At modelwise, we are all about embracing the best of both worlds – a hybrid work culture that allows us to work remotely and meet in person. This tradition is one of the ways we foster creativity and collaboration, which are essential for automating functional safety analysis. Over the past year, several architectural practices have been exploring or transitioning to a #FourDayWorkWeek. Daniel Rea has just posted Periscope's findings from their trialing which is the first time we have seen a report specifically highlighting the pros and cons of this kind of work pattern shift. We recommend reading the full report in full, see link below, but here are some of the pros and cons. Pros: - 85% of employees reported improved well-being and work-life balance. The extra rest day was beneficial for recovery and personal time. - Internal communication and collaboration among the team improved significantly with an aligned 4-day schedule. There was less need for weekly handovers. - Most clients and external consultants were broadly supportive and respectful of the 4-day week once expectations adjusted over time. - The trial necessitated streamlining internal meetings and processes for better efficiency. - Initial concerns about productivity markedly decreased as teams adapted by prioritising tasks more effectively. Cons: - The compressed schedule put more pressure on completing tasks and meeting deadlines. - Work intensity varied month-to-month. - Internal processes like design reviews, quality control, training and mentoring were compromised due to time constraints. - Delays from external parties waiting until Thursdays to send information had an amplified impact. - Some client meetings still fell on Fridays due to project pace, despite efforts to avoid this. - Reduced salaries during the initial trial period was a financial concern for employees. - While client-facing work was prioritized, there was less time for design development, research, and immersive project work.
