Patient and family engagement was embedded in the World Health Assembly resolution WHA72.6 – “Global action on patient safety” and the Global Patient Safety Action Plan 2021-2030 as key strategies for moving towards the elimination of avoidable harm in health care. World Patient Safety Day was established by the same resolution to increase public awareness and engagement, enhance global understanding, and work towards global solidarity and action by countries and partners to promote safety in health care. Each year a theme is selected to shed light on a priority area critical to patient safety.
