Did you know the smallest railroad in Kansas operates in Johnson County? 🚂 It's #RailSafetyWeek and we're honoring the Johnson County Airport Commission for winning the 2023 Jake with Distinction Award! 🎖 #RSW24 Safety is critically important to the short line and regional railroad industry! This distinction is awarded to any member railroad with no Federal Railroad Administration reportable injuries or fatalities for the previous year. "The Jake Awards are named for the late Lowell S. “Jake” Jacobson, the former President and General Manager of the Copper Basin Railway. The members of #ILRail put significant dollars, resources, and planning into ensuring our nation's railroads are tremendously safe. It is worth reminding both the public and policy makers that our industry is among the safest places to work, we are the safest way to move goods overland, and accident rates have dropped dramatically in the last quarter century. Read more via a new white paper from the Association of American Railroads about the work we do on safety and how our railroads are committed to being even safer. ⬇

"The safest way to move goods over land." That is rarely reflected in discussions about our nation's railroads, but facts back up that reality: "Data from the Federal Railroad Administration highlight significant safety improvements across the rail industry. The overall train accident rate in 2023 decreased 27% from 2000; the employee injury rate fell 50%; and grade crossing collision rate dropped 25%. Notably, railroads today boast lower employee injury rates than most over major industries, including trucking, airlines, agriculture, mining, manufacturing, construction and even grocery stores." Did you know? 💡📖 The Transcontinental Railroad, completed in 1869, forever altered the landscape of the United States. Connecting the East and West coasts for the first time, this monumental feat of engineering transformed travel, trade, and the nation's destiny. In 1862, the Pacific Railroad Act chartered the Central Pacific and the Union Pacific Railroad Companies, tasking them with building a transcontinental railroad that would link the United States from east to west. The two companies would race toward each other from Sacramento, California on the one side to Omaha, Nebraska on the other. Over the next seven years, workers would face dangerous elements, rugged terrain, and deadly risks in the Wild West. Their progress culminated in Promontory, Utah, on May 10, 1869, as the two sides finally met. In front of a crowd of workers and dignitaries, the final spike was driven linking the Central Pacific and Union Pacific in the “Golden Spike Ceremony.” This amazing engineering accomplishment helped to transform the American West, opening up a huge part of the country to easier travel, trade, and settlement. #didyouknow #engineeringhistory #railroad

Typical government move. Let’s see how many people we can pay to do nothing! One extra per engine should add up quick. The more time I have spent around government entities, the pattern of waste and useless regulations (which I say just gives high paying jobs to their network) just continues to reinforce how useless they are

Federal inspectors said they found an alarming number of defects in the locomotives and railcars Union Pacific Railroad was using at the world’s largest railyard in western State of Nebraska this summer, and the railroad was reluctant to fix the problems. Federal Railroad Administration Administrator Amit Bose wrote a letter to UP’s top three executives Sept. 8 expressing his concern that the defects represent a “significant risk to rail safety “ on the Union Pacific railroad. It's #RailSafetyWeek from September 18 through 24. The NRC urges you to join us to increase awareness so we can #StopTrackTragedies. Rail Safety Week is a collaborative effort among Operation Lifesaver, Inc., state Operation Lifesaver programs, and rail safety partners across the U.S., Canada, and Mexico. Please encourage your friends and family to take the Rail Safety Pledge: 1. I will make safe choices around railroad tracks and trains by obeying warning signs and always expecting a train. 2. I will stay off the tracks including when taking photographs or filming videos and will never walk on or too close to railroad tracks (it’s dangerous and illegal). 3. I will only walk, ride or drive across railroad tracks at designated crossings. 4. I will share the rail safety message with my friends and family.
