Are you a visionary? I'm like a raven. I like baubles, glitter, shiny things- even if I don't know what I'm going to to with them YET. I also really like vintage items, things that tell stories. I found three amazing vintage fabrics and I envisioned a tote. I did not envision myself making it, so I headed off to Etsy. One of the fabrics was from the 1940s. I started with the cat fabric. If you know me, or you've read any of my posts, it's no surprise that this started because of a cat. I mailed my vintage fabric off to a stranger and gave some general ideas of what I wanted, and how much of each fabric should be used to make a custom tote. I trusted that things would work out, and they exceeded my expectations. There was enough fabric left and she had experience making pouches. I was able to add on an order for some custom pouches with the remaining fabric. On this #socialsaturday , maybe a "stranger" will be your next colleague, boss, or a client. Today's small business question: I have an Etsy store I created a few years ago that I initially created to sell my Custom Fantasy Shoes. However now I make some other things particularly Home decor and Accessories. I've been working two jobs for three years now! 🤯 I don't normally share much on this platform, but to me, this is worth it. During May 2021, in the hectic times of COVID, I started an Etsy store selling resin keychains with only having a month experience using resin. Since then, I have expanded my products and learned many techniques to perfect placing dandelion seeds in resin. Recently, I've expanded into making some 💫"science"🔬themed products which have been met with an audience that I wouldn't have expected! The support means so much! This year I've completed a huge order of 250 keychains for a company within two weeks which was a task I never thought I was capable of. Along with other orders and making custom requests, the feedback I get from my clients are always what means the most to me! Three years in, my Etsy has now expanded to my own website, and I can't wait to see how far I can go! Balancing work with resin is difficult as this is a painstakingly slow process (it takes 24 hours to dry, trust me 😓). Sometimes I feel burnt out after work with no motivation to create, but somehow, I always find the push to complete it. I've always been told that being an artist isn't a real career growing up. Something along the lines of not making enough money or having stability, which I think that is something to consider, but it really shouldn't stop you from achieving your goals and dreams if you have the motivation. Pushing that aside and starting this little business has made the dream inside of me grow and I'm starting to look into preserving flowers in resin! All in all, never give up, and if you feel like you have a calling towards creating something, do it! One of the greatest things in life, I think, is to create awesome things and share with others! i have been selling my handmade jewelry on etsy since 2016. i’ve been a consumer on etsy for as long as i can remember. it’s a lovely concept & huge platform for artists to have a place to show the world their creations. but… i’ve recently deleted my etsy shop & moved to a new platform due to the increasing fees on etsy. 30% of my all-time sales went to etsy fees, which consisted of… • $0.20 to list a new item or renew a listing every 4 months. sure, it doesn’t seem like that much, but if you have tons of listings that are renewed often… it adds up. 💰 • 6.5% transaction fees for each order. • 3% $0.25 payment processing fees for each order. don’t get me wrong, the occasional exposure for my items was great on this marketplace, but after doing the math, it just wasn’t worth it to me anymore. so… say hi to my new online shop 🫶🏼 cashdrop.com/byblythe

"Am I a designer if no one likes my designs?" a question from my wife last night as we took product photos for her Etsy shop. This wasn't the only comment from her on ~day 8 of building an e-commerce business. There were squeals of excitement as she shouted "I'm a designer!" I shared my own excitement with my pride over my very first product photoshoot. There was a lot of those contradictory comments of excitement and nerves. But that's creativity, and that's risk. It's exciting to create and share something that you think is beautiful - and - it's terrifying to create and share something that you think is beautiful. I don't expect that rollercoaster to change, just that we'll level out with time. For now, we are just riding the highs through the fearful lows. The Etsy shop will be finished soon and we can start selling and then have another thing to be excited and nervous about.
