In a competition, someone has to come last. Does anyone remember the 2000 Olympic games when Eric the Eel became a cult hero for being a shy African swimmer who could barely staying afloat during the last 25 metres of his race? People cheered him on. My Mum was very enthusiastic and just loved him. He was humble and giving it a go for his Country! People come last in every event but it's interesting to see who is burned at the stake for it. If you read the comments on Rachael Gunn's Instagram page, they'd make you sick to your stomach. She's been accused of everything from cheating to cultural appropriation to being a disgrace. People love a good old-fashioned pile on! Some of the memes and videos are cute, clever and funny, it's hard not to laugh but at the centre of this is a person. My Insta feed it full of people trying to somehow connect their personal brand or product with RayGun so they can cash in on the moment. If I was a kid thinking about competing for the Olympics, I'd stay the hell away. We've proven it's not a safe space to have a day where we do our best and it's not good enough.
