Julie Hare explains how the “International student bubble has burst as visa crackdown bites!” Australia is not alone recent similar policy decisions have been made in #canada & the #uk, plus if Trump is elected in the #usa, anti-immigration policy will be first & foremost on the agenda. “The number of people in #Australia on student visas has finally turned around from its high point of 660,000 in September, indicating that Australia’s #migration bubble has begun to burst. The number of #studentvisa holders living in Australia fell by 50,000 from a record 664,178 at the end of September to 612,099 at the end of November. And while November witnessed yet another monthly record in offshore visa applications, fewer were approved than a year earlier. The government has been under intense pressure from voters & backbenchers over the impact that historically high migration levels are having on the rental market. Its major review of the migration system released in December contained a raft of reforms designed to weed out non-genuine students and return integrity to the visa system. However, the turnaround will put pressure on university budgets, which are also suffering from sluggish demand from domestic students. Abul Rizvi, a migration expert, said 3000 fewer visas were granted based on offshore applications in November. That equates to an 11.7% fall. The greatest falls were from #Nepal, down 32%, #Colombia, 26%, & the #Philippines & India, both down by more than 200 applications. Australia now has the highest foreign student visa fee in the world, after the federal government unexpectedly increased costs. Visa application fees increased by 125%, from $710 to $1,600. The fee hike came into place at midnight on Sunday without prior notice. The Australian Financial Review reports the change is expected to dramatically reduce applications, which had increased post-pandemic, in-part pushing net overseas migration to record levels. While the move is expected to curtail student migration, education consultant Sanjaya Singh KC writes on LinkedIn it will also hurt the nation's reputation. "The significant increase in living costs earlier followed by elephantine raise in student visa application charges ... is definitely going to hit the ‘brand Australia’ image in the international education sector," he writes. Australia providing a masterclass on "How To Hurt Your Economy 101". The impact of international students on Australia's culture, economy, and skills market cannot be ignored. But time and again, we are somehow the reason behind every single problem in the country. Lack of affordable housing? Kick out some students and/or migrants. Public transport stretched? Same. Cost of living crisis? Duh. Show me another country that benefits this much from international students and at the same time, also makes it difficult for them. Highest student visa fee in the world? C'mon Australia, do better. Be better.

Australian universities and colleges are reporting unprecedented visa refusals, with no clear rationale behind approvals and rejections. As explained in this article, offshore visa applications, particularly from Indian students, have seen zero approvals in some cases.
