If the govt wants to increase international student visa costs by 125% in the name of “fixing a broken system” let’s just go all in and fix a few more then: - increase the petroleum resource rent tax (about 30%) by 125%. That sector is massively under taxed. In Norway it’s about 90%! - remove negative gearing so property investors have to pay a lot more tax if they want to own more than one home. - ensure big tech companies actually pay tax in Australia. This idea that charging international students more to come to Australia will fix a broken system is such a strange and damaging piece of public policy, it boggles the mind!

If only the first suggestion was implemented, that will solve all fiscal deficits for the country, but they will never do that as that industry owns the Australian government.

Easier to go against the most vulnerable. Old school politics without the intention of actually improving things. Just patching up the mess
