This is Jones Middle School at an LOTC district competition. LOTC is a Texas middle school leadership program. This team is marching based on AFPAM 34-1203, AF D&C, but has been poorly trained. At first glance you might not see the problems, but the more you concentrate on their techniques, the more you see they miss the mark. AF armed element or flight D&C procedures are taken from TC 3-21.5 with AF techniques. ℹ️The commander should be at Sling Arms. ℹ️The commander should be using the command "Flight, Halt" and not "Drill Team, Halt". ℹ️Rifle manual is close, but missing certain specifics (e.g., left arm crossover for Order). ℹ️The command to go from one shoulder to another should be given on the right foot to keep the arm swing coordinated with the feet. ℹ️The guidon bearer's technique for going to Present is inaccurate, arms are brought overhead on the command Present. ℹ️Half Step is executed with a heel strike. ℹ️Commander should call Column Left, remain facing the flight while marching in place, and as the center of the formation passes in front, perform a Left Face-in-March and march at Half Step until you call Forward. ℹ️Alignment, spacing, footwork need work. I appreciate the uniform. The spats highlight the feet. 🔆Education is 🔑! . 🔹Read your manuals! Download them free at the Resources page here: www.thedrillmaster.org . What the, @malmstromafb? What on earth do you three Airmen think you're doing? Is this cool? Is it #patrioticer? #ceremonialer? Where is this position in AFPAM 34-1203? Huck Finn would be proud because all of you look like you're goin' fishin'. How you could do this, have a photo taken, and then have it published on Malmstrom AFB official social media just shows everyone our standards, even the seemingly little, stupid, insignificant standards, are gone. Do what you want as long as the outcome is #emotionaler. ❌Not only are these flags being carried over the shoulder like #HoboColors, ❌the American is on the far left, ❌the POW is a flag and not a color. It's only flown from a halyard, not a staff. ❌AFI 34-1201 SPECIFICALLY states the POW is not carried! ❌Two of the staffs have been cut down. The ferrule is missing and the bottom half is shorter. ❌Two of the finials are not authorized. 👉But, at least ya' got a cool photo, right? "Screw your standards." Little Arnie Schwarzy would be so proud. 🔆Education is 🔑! . 🔹Read your manuals! Download them free at the Resources page here: www.thedrillmaster.org . We have standards in the military tthat we are supposed to follow because many of those standards are directly related to saving lives. We are supposed to have enough integrity to follow published standards and not pick and choose which ones to follow and which ones are OK to ignore. Standards don't work like that. If we can't follow seemingly innocuous standards like those for color guard in MCO 5060.20 and NTP 13B, what happens when we come across something that affects people or costs millions of dollars? Those standards? We follow those... I would hope that @uscoastguardbootcamp would get with the program and better equip and properly train their color guard. ❌Light ash wood guidon staffs are required. ❌Gold-colored ferrules and screw joint are required. ❌The battle-ax, at a minimum, is the required finial. ❌Mirror Present is not authorized outside of the Ceremonial Honor Guard. ❌Fringe is forbidden on the national color. ❌Guards flare the right hand at the small of the stock and wrap the left. ❌Color guards form and march at Close Interval only. • • • • • 🔆Education is 🔑! . 🔹Read your manuals! I couldn't ask for a better demonstration as to how to get the flag out of your face than this. Thank you to @danbates58 for posting this! 👉You for up in column formation, go to Right Shoulder/Carry and step off. Suddenly, your flag is in your face and you can't see anything. What do you do? You move it. For all the perfectionists who might be appalled at the idea of moving the silk with the left hand, this technique is sometimes the only option for the bearer. Would you rather: 1️⃣March in the wrong direction and/or be out of step? Or, 2️⃣Stay in step, in formation, and not thoroughly embarrass yourself and the team? The choice is obvious. Now, for Cadets who are on competitive color guards this is the last thing you want to do, but it is necessary at times. I love the @usnceremonialguard, especially the colors element. Question: Why are the bearers (the last year or two) constantly at Ready Two? Just wondering. #MilitaryColorGuard #ColorGuard • • • • • 🔆Education is 🔑! . 🔹Read your manuals! #MakeTheManualOfArmsGreatAgain and understand that, incredibly, MCO 5060.20 doesn't apply to both training depots. They both replicate the MCO with local documents, and add much more for the training environment. What's the result? A document that fully explains the training for D&C and the eventual slight change. Click on the tag at the top and see my recent post regarding the three grips on the rifle that are dependent on your service. Notice my thumb for the MC/N/CG grip. It's "tucked" into the curl of the index finger. Why is that? Because my fingers are probably further wrapped. I just went to my office, grabbed my M16 and replicated the grip shown here by pulling my fingers back to the right just a bit. That forced me to rest my thumb on my index finger. This is another example of the Marine Corps having three D&C standards. One for each Depot and the MCO. #MakeRegulationDrillGreatAgain 🔆Education is 🔑! . 🔹Read your manuals! Colors presentation and exit at #PortForColors. Port is not your usual position for the flagstaff but it is VERY stable since you hold the staff with both hands. I teach it to everyone as an option for entrance, presenting, and exit. After a colors presentation, the color guard flags are no longer the focus, the flags on the stage (at the back of the hangar, etc.) take over while the team leaves at Port or even #AnglePort. Angle Port gets the colors through a doorway and is also used to "diminish" the presence of the colors when not in a ceremony. For instance, the color guard finished a ceremony outside (e.g., a wreath laying) and now marches away from the area to transportation to pack up the equipment. You don't want to parade the colors as if officially continuing the ceremony, so you move off in a formal and professional manner but not blatantly calling attention to the team. 👉Here, the Commandant's Four present from Right Shoulder (Carry) and return to it. As they depart they assume Port. Only the C4 arw authorized to use this position for the rifles. #MilitaryColorGuard #ColorGuard From @marinebarrackswashington • • • • • 🔆Education is 🔑! . 🔹Read your manuals! Well done, @ohionationalguard! Impressive! National Guard units *should* carry departmental or NG organizational colors, but most of the time cannot because it requires more people. They also *should* be carrying the state flag. DoD Instruction 5410.19 Vol 4 says one service can carry other departmental colors when the other services are not available to provide members to the team. ℹ️You need spade markers (read about them at my website). ℹ️Free hands are a bit inconsistent. ❌Do not tuck your thumb into your curled fingers. ❌3'x5' colors are not authorized. You can only mount 3'x4' colors on 8' staffs. ⭐Spacing is mostly consistent. ⭐⭐Harness socket level. ⭐Good grips on the rifles. ❌No ribbons and badges for color bearers. ℹ️Make sure you lightly crimp the tabs on the back of the belt keepers so that they stay in place one inch from the buckle. • • • • • 🔆Education is 🔑! . 🔹Read your manuals! The Citadel, Virginia Military Institute, and @vtcorpsofcadets (Virginia Tech, pictured) all have the guards for their color guards work with fixed bayonets even though the color guard has never been a fighting element. The 1800s shows us that the makeup of the color guard has a single color bearer and around five armed guards (one at either side and three at the rear, all keeping the spacing of what we call today, normal Interval). Today, the guards no longer fix bayonets because colors is a purely ceremonial element. There are two more reasons for #NoFixedBayonetsOnColors 2️⃣The physical issue that sharp objects and flag silks don't mix well. 3️⃣The regs. MCO 5060.20 states fixed bayonets are not authorized for colors. TC 3-21.5, AR 840-10 and AFPAM 34-1203, and AFI 34-1201 show and state what equipment is authorized and bayonets are not on the list or shown. ❌The US is lower than the other colors! 👉I know the reasoning behind the Citadel and VMI companies parading with fixed bayonets, both schools were called up for battle during the Civil War and that tradition has remained since. For the *companies*. I don't know the reasoning for VA Tech. • • • • • 🔆Education is 🔑! . 🔹Read your manuals! Download them free at the Resources page here: www.thedrillmaster.org .
