The desire is to have a structural exposed timber rafter and beam truss system. (We don't do roofs.) The dilemma is having a tremendous amount of wood exposed to the elements and if needing repair, a massive undertaking. This is our solution, a decorative system made from PVC and aluminum, strong enough to withstand the elements. What's your favorite detail? 🔨 This photo captures several areas where I put in significant effort to achieve an exceptional finish. My personal favorite is the shaker panel beneath the window—a small but impactful touch that adds both care and character to the home. This detail is part of the original structure, which we carefully removed and rebuilt. The old panel was rotted, and the brickwork behind it was, let's just say, "full of holes." Now, with new brickwork, added insulation, and fresh timber, it's been fully restored to last a lifetime and offer a flawless finish. #InteriorDesign #Architecture #PropertyDevelopment #Construction

This material sample board reflects the early design investigations for our upcoming residential project in the East Sussex countryside. Drawing directly from the natural elements present on site, the palette is influenced by local materials and textures. The photograph included highlights part of the site, where a stagnant lake is planned for restoration and expansion, creating a better and more visually appealing relationship between the building and the landscape. Oak trees are prevalent in the area, and their branches, leaves, and fallen bark have informed our approach to material selection. A key focus of this project is the exploration of shou sugi ban cladding, a technique of charring wood to increase durability and texture. MIXED USE — A few façade related tips from a #WestLoop #chicago #mixeduse building we worked on a few years ago. For this project we added new building addition by expanding from an empty parking lot, and connecting it to the existing building on the site.    When considering design options, as an architect you can opt for a drastically different look from the older building — or strive for a close resemblance in brick finishes.    Brick colors are significant in Chicago, especially when blending existing and new structures together. For sake of consistency, we suggest matching the new building’s brick color to the brick color used in the older building, which in this case was Chicago common brick. Building Envelopes are Cool

🏛 Renovations protecting the Hagia Sophia invested just 0.2% of construction costs to mitigate 70% of potential threats. Key Points: Wall Weatherproofing 📏The walls are extremely thick, around 4 meters (13 ft), constructed with carefully selected and durable materials like marble, granite, and bricks. 📏The walls were coated with a special hydraulic lime-based mortar that acted as a waterproofing layer to prevent moisture penetration into the interior. 📏This mortar had a low permeability of around 10^-11 m/s, providing excellent resistance against water ingress. Roof Weatherproofing 📏For the recent renovations in the 2010s, modern waterproofing membranes with a tensile strength of over 15 MPa were likely applied to the roof to enhance its weather resistance. 📏 The roof is covered with lead tiles weighing around 20 kg/m², and the domes are clad with glazed ceramic tiles to shed water and protect against weathering. Thoughts: Let's draw inspiration from the Hagia Sophia's enduring resilience.
