A lot of people associate space with their childhood - at K2 Space Corporation we hope to help make those childhood dreams a reality.
We're excited to introduce the next member of our team, Maral Abbasinik, our Build Program Manager who comes to us from SpaceX.
Tell us about yourself Maral
I was born and raised in Tehran, Iran. 11 years ago, my parents, two younger siblings, and I packed 7 suitcases, sold everything we owned, and moved to California. That's when my American dream started. 6-months after arriving in the US, I worked 2 jobs while studying to pass my English second language classes in community college. My parents taught me to work hard for what I believe in and never give up, even when things get hard. This strong work ethic helped me get into the engineering program at UCI, where I double majored in mechanical and aerospace engineering.
During my senior year of college I joined the UCI Hyperloop team and participated in the first ever competition, where I met several SpaceX engineers. After learning more about SpaceX, I applied and joined the avionics team. During my tenure there, I had the opportunity to work on Starship in Boca Chica, TX and Los Angeles - where I started and stood up a team to manufacture heatshields for Raptor. Last November, I decided to start on an exciting new journey at K2 Space!
Outside of work, I love to do hot yoga, ski, and spend time with my family, friends, and sweet dog, Nutella. I also recently finished my yoga teacher certification and teach in my free time. One of my biggest passions is to bring science and spirituality closer together.
What was your first memory of space?
I’ve always been curious about space and perplexed by the fact that we know so little about the universe. From a young age I recognized how small we are compared to the vastness of space.
I remember when I was just 5 or 6 years old sitting with my dad on the hood of our car looking up at the sky, and asking, "What is up there? Who is out there?" Naturally, he didn't have all of the answers, even when I pressed him further with an extended line of questioning.
That curiosity about our universe continues to inspire my career today.
What space application are you most excited for moving forward?
Making space more accessible in new and different ways. Science, knowledge and even making humans multi-planetary. Space is cool and I want to do a space walk one day!
