Here are a few Southern traditions commonly observed on New Year's: 1. Hoppin' John: Hoppin' John is a traditional Southern dish made with black-eyed peas, rice, and bacon or ham hock. It is believed to bring good luck and prosperity for the coming year. Eating Hoppin' John on New Year's Day is a common tradition in the South. 2. Collard Greens: Alongside Hoppin' John, collard greens are often served on New Year's Day. It is believed that eating greens will bring financial prosperity. The dish is typically seasoned with ham hock or bacon. 3. Cornbread: Cornbread is a staple in Southern cuisine and is often served with Hoppin' John and collard greens on New Year's Day. Its golden color symbolizes wealth and good fortune. 4. New Year's Day Parade: Many Southern cities and towns host New Year's Day parades, featuring marching bands, colorful floats, and community participation. These parades are a festive way to celebrate the beginning of the year. 5. Resolutions and Superstitions: Like people all over the world, Southerners also make New Year's resolutions for personal improvement. Additionally, some Southern superstitions include opening the front door at midnight to let out the old year and welcoming the new year, and avoiding doing laundry on New Year's Day to avoid washing away good luck. These traditions vary across different Southern states and communities, but they all contribute to the unique and vibrant New Year's celebrations in the region.

What fills your cup? This year I’ve been reflecting on what brings me joy. As with most humans, the answer to that question, for me, is being around other humans. I didn’t really do that last year. I spent a lot of the year in the office, focused more on “getting it done” than “how” and “who” I was doing it with. Looked fabulous from the outside, but inside I felt very alone. I took some time to reflect on that towards the end of the year, and concluded that what I was doing was just as important as how I was doing it, and who I was doing it with. This year is all about community for me. Today, I was so fortunate to get to spend Valentines as Galentines, an evening with friends, sharing stories, and experiences. Last year, I’d probably have said I was too busy and made that my justification for not making the time. I felt so much joy in community, and so much gratitude for the people who took the time. Part of creating safer workplaces, and communities, is creating community, making time for wellbeing. To walk, to talk, to eat, and to be human. What can you do to create community? 🍂✨ Yesterday's BIA Sales & Marketing Council planning session was nothing short of inspiring – and deliciously heartwarming! In the spirit of 'Friendsgiving,' we gathered not just as colleagues but as a community, sharing more than just strategic plans for the future. My husband contributed his now-famous rosemary garlic sourdough alongside a festive pumpkin spice sourdough, each loaf infused with love and a sprinkle of holiday cheer. As we broke bread, the room filled with an array of fabulous dishes, each accompanied by a story, a tradition, or a memory that made them special. It was a feast for the soul as much as for the palate. But it wasn't just about the food. Our session was a testament to the power of collaboration and the shared passion we have for the BIA's mission. We rolled up our sleeves and laid down the groundwork for what promises to be an incredible year ahead. We're talking about a calendar brimming with engaging events, strategies for dynamic membership growth, and boundless opportunities for networking. Most importantly, we're united in our commitment to support the BIA's vital mission: to get more homes built in San Diego. We understand the importance of community, of having a place to call home, and we're dedicated to making that a reality for more people. As we look to the future, we're filled with gratitude and excitement. We're ready to tackle challenges, celebrate successes, and work hand-in-hand with all of you.
