#17 Building the team: Failure stories I had 3 lessons-learned posts in the calendar already (#7-9), but there is one more thing that is crucial for better outcomes of the lessons-learned sessions, building a strong team and enforcing creativity and experiments culture. And it is accepting of failures. In some cases, people will be comfortable sharing their failure stories, but we need to accept that it is hard. We all love to win, achieve better outcomes, and get social acceptance, not to mention promotions and bonuses. But it is impossible to grow and get better without failures. Ed Sheeran said it better, that I can https://lnkd.in/dxfDJg5P Anyway, how to build that culture of learning and accepting the failures? I love Dr. David Burkus's advice - Share personal intel (although he meant to say a different thing). Share the news, the metrics, and the product performance results with the team. Even if they are sad, transparency is the key. I appreciated the All-hands meetings in Oxagile when the war in Ukraine started and later. It makes you a part of the team, and it is what makes you stay even in the darkest days. Be the first to share. As a Scrum master, manager, Team Lead or just anyone who cares - share your failures first. Normalize the conversation about failures, focus on lessons learned and you`ll get support. Where there is no fear - creativity, transparency and respect come. Normalize experiments. Hypothesis, prototyping, incremental approach - they help to deliver value. But its dark side is that not every feature will be accepted, and not every experiment will succeed. Manage that expectation in the team and with the Stakeholders. Add challenging questions to the Sprint Reviews, like: - Could we do it differently? - What value does the feature bring? - How will we understand if the Increment was successful? Celebrate failures. Some companies and communities have Failure nights - they are great. Search for the nearest one or organise yourself. If your team struggles with letting go and killing features, explain the alternative costs concept. For the new product development set the mantra “The faster we fail, the faster we create a better product” How do you deal with failures? #ScrumAdvent2023 #buildingtheteam #scrum

Features, processes and tools are all means to an end. Focus on the outcomes you want to enable for customers first, and work backwards from there.

#BusinessAnalysts - Are you with us! 👊 Do you see your job and career as serving people and changing the world? We make a difference, our work makes a difference! 👇 Comment below how you change the world! Here are some examples from my projects: 📍 I have helped 100s of thousands reduce the stress of setting up and paying their first/initial mortgage payments by setting up and streamlining processes to get mortgage servicing set up more quickly after closing 📍 I have helped millions save and invest for retirement by helping Financial Advisors at several firms have the tools they need to help clients invest and see their futures. 📍 I have helped struggling residents of my state and county get to needed public services by helping streamline and automate government services. 📍I have helped millions of people keep their phone number consistent so that they continue to be connected to loved ones. (Telephony number portability tech project). 📍 I have helped millions of people save money on their telecommunications costs by helping telephony companies combined billing of landline, mobile, and internet services. It's easy to go about our sometimes stressful work thinking we are not making a difference, we are! Especially if we do our work from a customer an user point of view! Customer and user focus is key in delivering results, not just for organizations, but for the community too!
