Jeep's steady price hikes and extension into luxury segments has helped Stellantis CEO Carlos Tavares transform the automaker from the underdog of Detroit to the most profitable. But is it costing him sales and marketshare? Or is this just a product cycle blip? Jeep has posted negative US sales for nine straight quarters, including last quarter, when peers like General Motors Ford Motor Company Toyota Motor Corporation and Hyundai Motor Company (현대자동차) showed strong results. Interest rates are the highest in more than two decades, and yes the average new-car price has risen about 30% in the past five years -- so why is Jeep in particular taking it on the chin? Does the American consumer associate Jeep as being a "luxury brand," an "off-road brand," or both? With the arrival of the new Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer years ago, Jeep is striving to push further upstream. The brand's lacked a proper three-row SUV to battle GM's Suburban/Yukon/Yukon Denali as well as the blue oval's Edition and more posh Lincoln Navigator...but is this product strategy working? Would this large, body-on-frame three-row SUV be better badged as Dodge or even Ram? The latter's buyers we know aren't afraid of splurging on a fully-loaded near six-figure 1500 or 2500. I recently spent a week testing a 2023 Grand Wagoneer L Series III which carried an as-tested price of $123,045. Its six-figure MSRP was, I do think, well-warranted given how sumptuous and tech-rich this massive luxury liner was. For many long hours on the highway, it was impeccably comfortable and easy to drive. I thought I'd miss the outgoing 6.4L HEMI V8, but its replacement new Hurricane Turbo-Six was a treat and surprisingly efficient too. After 513 miles, I averaged 17.4 mpg. And, unlike some other Stellantis products I've been in as of late, I wasn't confronted with any electrical gremlins or problems. I'd *really* like to see Stellantis execute an overdue Durango replacement atop this platform and see what happens sales-wise. Dodge could use another fresh addition to the lineup beyond the Hornet.

New vehicle inventory is at its *highest* point since late 2020: Up 51% from a year ago. BUT... it's not all roses and butterflies. Rising inventory numbers are *not* evenly distributed across brands. Highest Days' Supply (slowest selling): Jeep Ram Jaguar Alfa Romeo Dodge Lincoln Chrysler Lowest Days' Supply (fastest selling): Toyota Lexus Honda Kia Subaru Porsche Land Rover Chevrolet So, while inventory has risen significantly, certain brands are flooded with supply while others are still below demand equilibrium. Can the Jeep Avenger win in Europe?? A resounding YES. "2023 European Car of the Year, besting the VW ID". Taking on Toyota Motor Corporation, Volkswagen Group, Peugeot, Renault, Ford Motor Company and others in the high profile segment will prove a challenge. The product looks great on the surface! The brand is iconic on a global scale but Stellantis must ensure three things (Same holds true for North America): - Product quality has always been an issue and if not fixed, will be an "also-ran". Europeans tend to be a little less forgiving than North American customers. - A committed, differentiated retail distribution network, in both sales and service strategy. A critical component for success. - Price and value as always. A robust retention strategy of those new to the brand remains paramount. The total U.S. supply of available unsold #newvehicles opened March up 52% from a year ago at 2.74 million units, up 942,000 units, and higher than February’s measure of 2.61 million. The #domesticautomakers continued to have the highest inventory. Dodge led the pack of five at the top, followed by Jeep Chrysler Ram and Lincoln brands with the lowest supply were #Asianimports.
