Most of us got into fashion because of creativity. We've seen McQueen's shows, Galliano's drama, Chalayan's conceptualism. We had Vivien Westwood and Marc Jacobs' Louis Vuitton era. Even David Koma was doing structural coctail dresses and Mary Katrantzou had chandelier skirts you couldn't sit in. But as a fashion student, you get to uni and people start asking you questions like: who is your customer, who will buy this and your teachers tell you things like: design more dresses and coats, because they sell. So it kind of starts dawning on you that this is a product and it needs to have "some" functionality. Then luxury decided to tap into wider customer base and started offering "cheaper" products like t-shirts and sweatshirts to the masses, so they too can say they own branded stuff. Virgil introduced streetwear to the top of the fashion pyramid, although Jacobs already had his Grunge collection in the 80s, it just wasn't the right time. This opened the way for Off White, Vetements and catapulted Demna to the top spot. So now, the Margiela couture show hits right into our hearts, because this is a lost era, a glimse of the glorious past, while we continue woking in an industry that is so confused and polarized. Creativity, my friends, can be harnessed to really change this industry, but sometimes fashion can just be art. This is one of those times. #margiela #couture #couturefashion #galliano #fashion #fashionindustry https://lnkd.in/d8cQ5kpz

The Met Gala, the FASHION event of the year, the day and then the week where we all become experts in fashion (at the end of the day, we just comment what we like and what we don’t). The day where we finally get a fresh air of creativity and where we get the chance to dream, is also a day to make a statement. I would like to see a report of the hours of labor, the cost of materials, logistics, flights taken and waste generated to support this event, as well as the benefits and revenues this event generates to the different brands. Is the Met Gala sustainable? Is it a win or a loss for brands? What’s behind THE event of the year? In an industry where Haute Couture dresses are crafted for a one occasion only (the fashion show or a red carpet), I believe that reusing one of those dresses, bringing back the archives, the story of the brand, is a statement and solution. While remaining sustainable and opting for not creating a new piece, with the cost, the hours and the “waste” generated, GIVENCHY and Kendall Jenner are leading and proving that the past can and will always make us dream of the future. #MetGala #Sustainability #Fashion #Givenchy #MAFED

Luxury brands facing the heat of the changing ecosystems amid economic turmoil. Coping mechanisms can only go so far before the old systems fail entirely if a strategic shift is not put into action. - Musical chairs of Creative Directors and CEOs - Shutting down product lines and operations - Closing down stores and minimizing workforces - Losing brand DNA to appeal to larger demographics - Changing Celebrity Influence and Influencer marketing dynamics - Increasing costs of supply chain, materials, and operations - Saturation and new markets pressure … etc. Do you think it’s already too late for some brands to turn things around? What do you think can be done to revive?
Valentino has scrapped its June runway shows for menswear and haute couture following last week’s announcement that creative director Pierpaolo Piccioli is exiting the brand. Rome-based Valentino had previously planned to stage a men’s runway in Milan and has been a longtime fixture of Paris haute couture week, which has been bumped up from early July to late June this season as the city prepares to host the Olympic Games. Piccioli’s departure comes amid a flurry of changes at Valentino owner Mayhoola. Both the CEO and marketing chief of Valentino stablemate Balmain have left the company in recent weeks. Meanwhile, former Chloé CEO Riccardo Bellini has joined the group in a yet to be announced role. Valentino is set to announce a new creative director soon. “Creativity will continue to lead the company as a key pillar, shaping new future collections in both women’s and men’s ready-to-wear and haute couture, elevating the brand’s DNA, its iconic codes and unrivalled Italian heritage,” Valentino said in its statement.
