Summer Student Update! Check out what Reece Fortner, a senior in the NMU CM program is up to this summer: Q: What's the name of the company you're working for? A: Ballard Marine Construction Q: Where are you located? A: Evanston, Illinois Q: What are your major responsibilities? A: Analyze survey reports, drawings, plans, specifications, contractual documents. Estimate quantities and cost of materials, equipment, and labor. Inspect project sites to monitor progress and ensure conformance to design specifications, safety standards, and productivity goals. Q: What's been your favorite part of the experience so far? A: My favorite part of this experience so far has to be just watching the project as a whole go from plans and documents into actually being executed.

The PACE program is offered at MILLER CAREER & TECHNOLOGY CENTER in the Katy Independent School District. The acronym stands for Professional Advancement through Career Education. PACE is a competitive course offered to graduating seniors only, which has gained popularity over the last few years. PACE students must have a GPA of 3.8 or higher to apply – in other words, high achievers drawing the top students from across the district. During the present 2023 – 2024 school year, R.G. Miller | DCCM partnered with PACE, by providing a 17-week internship for graduating senior Nicholas Ding. Nicholas, a student at Seven Lakes High School worked with various members of our engineering teams under the guidance of R.G. Miller’s President, Mark Gehringer, PE, Chief Executive Officer, Jack Miller, P.E., and Vice President of Development Operations, Caleb Stone. It was an ideal partnership as Nicholas learned first-hand about the industry and multitude of projects currently under development in and around the Houston metropolitan area. Being guided by several of our industry’s most knowledgeable mentors, Nicholas gained hands-on experience in a professional workplace environment, attended learning sessions, participated in daily team meetings, and earned honors credit with PACE. Nicholas plans to attend Texas A&M University in the fall with an engineering major. #RGMiller #DCCM #DesignDevelopGrow #sevenlakeshighschool #paceprogram #katyisd #ATM #CivilEngineering #LandDevelopment #SiteDevelopment #Engineering #Development #Engineers #PublicWorks #Sustainability #Hydrology #Transportation #GIS #WaterResources #Water #Wastewater #WaterInfrastructure

Good Morning!! I’m working off of little sleep but got to college early. Don’t worry, I’ve grabbed a Gingerbread latte at the cafe. I’m ready to get this assignment out of the way to be honest. Next month I’ll be in Building Construction and Building Materials Science. I’m not sure what to think yet. 😩 Most people go into construction because they hate #science and #math. In fact, most of my classmates were upset that they have to take these classes as they are #quantitysurveying apprentices, #cad apprentices, etc. #STEM My manager says he’ll see what I’ll learn about metal properties such as nickel. I heard a bit of maths is still required in the course, so we shall see. Supply and demand still a worrying factor for companies employing Engineers in Ireland. Important for the engineers in Ireland to encourage future generation's to choose engineering, trades and apprenticeships as a solid career choice. Also still alot of work for government bodies and employers to continue to promote such careers and of course encouraging more females to enter the industry.
