Battery dispatch rates in the Balancing Mechanism are currently limited by the ‘15-minute rule’, which limits assets to shorter dispatches. In November 2023, National Grid ESO opened a proposal for Grid Code change 'GC0166', which aims to change this. This change will improve communication between batteries and the control room, allowing ESO to determine availability for longer dispatches. So far, two different options have been suggested for the specific data that batteries will need to communicate. In the first option, the Grid Code could be changed so batteries would have to communicate their state of charge directly to the control room. This data could then be used to infer their ability to deliver on longer dispatches. Alternatively, battery operators could declare their Maximum Deliverable Bid (MDB) and Maximum Deliverable Offer (MDO) volumes. These volumes would depend on their state of charge and any capacity contracted in frequency response services. However implemented, the impact of this change could be significant. Increasing the maximum dispatch length of batteries to 30-minutes would allow them to compete for 69% of total dispatch volumes, compared to the current 24%. Industry consultation on the change will take place in July - a chance for battery operators to have a say on their preferred method.

⚡️Highly recommend Snepa Power’s forecast models! The software is user friendly and has many options that are beneficial for the operation. I encourage all data centre operators to check this out!
Our forecast models have exceeded our and our customers expectations! As we passed the half year 2024 mark, we analyzed the performance of our forecast models and decided to share it! The results rhyme well with the common reaction of new customers who start using the platform, as they typically comment on how accurate the Scheduling module is. Over the past 6 months the forecasts have been going from great to exceptional. Our tailormade forecast models for power intensive users (>10 MW loads) have steadily improved with a forecast error on average going from just below 1,3% past 6 months, to 1,1% past 3 months and then reaching below 0,8% for the past month. Why is this important? This is crucial for: 👉 power intensive industries to keep their imbalance costs at a minimum, 👉 grid operators and electricity sales companies, who rely on accurate schedules and orders of power intensive users. By using our platform, power intensive users can lower their imbalances with minimized effort and become, as we like to say, “great neighbours on the grid”. This in turn contributes to a more stable grid and new opportunities for delivering more power through existing infrastructure.

Most power lines today are “dumb” – that is, operated without insight into their real-time conditions. That means the grid’s total capacity is untapped. Power grid optimizers provide grid operators with the data they need to predict the real-time actual capacity of specific power lines and determine new, safe limits for operating them.
