Ellen Daniel, Marketing Director at the Mayerson JCC, shares her thoughtful reflections on resilience, a quality deeply embedded in the fabric of Israel and its people. Through her journey as part of JCC Association's Martin Pear Fellowship, Ellen explores the enduring spirit and strength that have shaped a nation capable of overcoming immense challenges. In her blog post, she highlights the concept of "gam v'gam"—the idea of "both this and that"—reflecting the multifaceted resilience seen throughout Israel's history and culture.

Our Institute, "Am haZikaron," is a non-profit organization that has been researching the histories of Jewish families. We perform public projects and scientific work; please see our website, amhazikaron.org, for details.
Our project, "Russia. Three-year pogrom," commemorates 300 000 victims of the #Jewish pogroms that occurred during the Civil War in #Russia from 1918 to 1921. Including those who survived but were crippled, raped, orphaned, and left without any means of survival, there were about 1 000 000 victims.
Essentially, every Russian-speaking family has victims in those pogroms. However, they do not know this.
During the #Soviet Union times, this page of history was erased, and today, there are no opportunities to check if one's family was involved.
We digitize lists of victims and testimonies that we retrieve from the local archives of the former Russian empire.
Since most modern #Jews have some ancestors in the Russian #Empire of the 19th century, which contained most of the world's Jewry, this project is significant for all Jews, not only Russian-speaking ones, because their families were also involved.
Currently we're developing the website pogrom.amhazikaron.org only in Russian, we plan translation in the future (here programmatic methods might also be useful).
Many materials are in #Yiddish.
Johnson’s assessment of Israel’s moral depravity leading to its likely demise in the near-term is instructive for all United States citizens as well. By allowing the U.S. to be prostituted (Johnson’s term) by Israel in the interest of the old world Zionist sense of regional superiority, the U.S. has squandered its moral standing among nations and more importantly, the founding aspirational vision for the new and future world as set forth by the U.S. founders (my interpretation), despite our national sins of 1) genocide, 2) slavery, 3) female subjugation and 4) child labor, among other sins.
U.S. citizens, U.S. allies, U.S. adversaries and peaceful U.S. rivals who enjoy symbiotic relationships of domestic power and power potential with U.S. power might consider that the U.S. can easily fall into domestic and/or international military and economic ruin based on our long and ill-advised unconditional support of Zionist Israel. Unpredictability from such a rapid fall of the U.S. as the primary [overextended] global hegemon in 2024 akin to the fall of the Soviet Union in 1991 may or may not benefit U.S. rivals in the short, medium and long terms.
It is in the enlightened self-interest of all humans in our current and non-static social roles, domestic and global as 1) leaders, 2) maintainers, 3) followers and 4) dependents to re-imagine and re-orient our relative power positions synergistically. This can help us better face multiple existential challenges at the solar system scale beyond continued dysfunctional, precarious and self-destructive oppositional relationships across and among our homeplanet regions.

The End of History of the State of Israel
Last year marks a pivotal moment in the history of Israel. We stand at the threshold of change, where the familiar narrative gives way to a new chapter waiting to be written. It's not the end of Israel's history, not even the beginning of the end, but rather the end of the history we've known.
We find ourselves at a crossroads, where old paradigms no longer suffice and the call for a new vision grows louder. It's time to embrace this opportunity to redefine our collective journey, to chart a course that reflects our shared values and aspirations.
Let us honor the past, acknowledging its complexities and lessons, while daring to imagine a future that transcends the confines of tradition and prejudice. Let's build a society that champions justice, equality and the freedom of spirit.
As we turn the page, let us do so with courage and humility, knowing that the story of Israel is far from over. This is not the end, but rather the beginning of a new narrative—one shaped by hope, resilience, and the unwavering belief in the power of humanity to forge a better tomorrow.

Last week, on the eve of International Holocaust Remembrance Day 2024, the Center for the Study of Contemporary European Jewry at Tel Aviv University presented its third 'For a Righteous Cause' Annual Report. The sixty-five-page Report reviews and analyzes initiatives and programs for combatting antisemitism and racism in countries around the world, as well as projects to preserve Jewish heritage, and presents policy recommendations.
"On Oct. 7, the masks came off in many places, including some that pretend to be enlightened," says the Center's Head, Prof. Uriya Shavit. "But we would be wrong to say that 'the whole world is against us.' The last few months have shown that the Jewish people also have many friends who have learned the lessons of history."
According to Prof. Shavit, "In the fight against antisemitism, we see many slogans and speeches, but few action plans that set transparent, measurable, and attainable goals. If we want to reverse current trends, we need to have new legislation and aggressive enforcement in relation to social media, alongside education and policing focused on a limited number of cities and regions in countries where the majority of physical attacks occur."
