Volkswagen has made two significant announcements on Friday afternoon: one was a profit warning, indicating that the company is going to generate a revenue of €320bn in 2024, around €4bn less than last year. Car sales have been going slow especially for the Volkswagen brand. The second announcement was a price drop for their ID.3 of €3,000, which together with their e-mobility discount of €3,570 brings it this car below €30,000. I personally believe this price is fair. The ID.3 is a very decent car, I drove it for two years. I’m confident this is the start for more price drops for electric cars in Germany. Presumably, the car makers are going to wait with delivery until next year, so those sales are already counting against their increased 2025 fleet targets. But this is a great sign for consumers, the charging industry, even Volkswagen itself and the wider industry. Bringing down prices will increase sales revenue and profitability will follow. #ev #electricvehicles #evcharging #volkswagen

Interesting stuff from the boss of VWG UK here. No hint of any issues in terms of waning demand for EVs or the threat from China - it was a record year of sales, and an increase in market share for VWG EVs. Reason to be cheerful for every one of his brands, he reckons. But... 1. charging infrastructure companies need to have targets set for them, as carmakers do, and 2. government incentives need to be reintroduced for private buyers. Always a pleasure to chat with the guys at the top of the industry.

According to a recent Wall Street Journal article, new car registrations in Europe dropped by 18% in August, with significant declines from major manufacturers like Stellantis and Volkswagen. A 44% plunge in electric vehicle (EV) sales only added to the pressure. This market slowdown brings into focus the need for innovative strategies to address these challenges, and one viable solution is subscriptions. Four months into the first year of the UK's ZEV mandate, here's how each car company is faring against the targets. The implied target is the ZEV sales target after taking into account credits earned from selling more fuel efficient vehicles, and varies a lot from manufacturer to manufacturer. We expect discounts and deals on BEVs from brands associated with VW, Stellantis, Ford, Nissan and Renault! The data suggest that the UK will finish the year on 1.9m car sales, of which we expect 340,000 to be BEVs, with an effective ZEV mandate target of around 19%. This is quite interesting. Some way to go for Volkswagen, Stellantis, Ford Motor Company, Nissan Motor Corporation, and Renault Group. As new regulation and target dates start to approach, the pressure is being put on some businesses to speed up their strategic shift to align to a more sustainable operation. Automotive OEMs need to shift from the mindset of new car sales volume to focusing on developing software based products that drive revenue through upgrades, refurbishing, and longevity. The days of just 'sell new' is coming to a close with changes in consumer expectations, regulations and standards. But the reality is the whole value chain from manufacturing to insurance to retail need to adapt, not just OEMs. Thoughts on this? What strategies will some of these OEMs take?
