🇪🇺 The EU recently increased its energy goals from a 32% share of renewable energy by 2030 to a minimum of 42.5%. Michaela Holl, Senior Associate at Agora Energiewende, describes the new climate law as "a quantum leap." She adds that beyond simply presenting a technocratic net zero model, it is crucial to also deliver a way to make it happen. 🧬 Marie Claire Brisbois, Senior Lecturer at the University of Sussex, outlines that we need to make material changes in the form of replacing existing physical infrastructure, but on top of this, as "social animals it takes time for us to make behavioral changes and we need to have the space and be supported in doing that." 📣 Simon Evans, Deputy Editor & Senior Policy Editor at Carbon Brief, said that a lot of the action is based on politics and messaging. New legislation aims to protect European firms from US and Chinese competition during the clean energy transition, while mandating big oil to help reduce atmospheric carbon dioxide. Governments approved the Net Zero Industry Act (NZIA) to prevent the EU from lagging in clean energy technology and to deploy carbon capture and storage (CCS) at scale. Adopted on May 27 in Brussels, the NZIA redirects EU funds, speeds up permitting, and complements the Critical Raw Materials Act to secure key elements like lithium. This addresses fears of clean tech investments shifting west due to US subsidies or being undercut by Eastern state support. The law mandates 40% of domestic demand for 'net-zero' technologies, like batteries and solar panels, to be met by EU manufacturing by 2030. It also targets a 15% global market share in key low-carbon technologies by 2040. Petroleum producers must develop CCS facilities to store 50 million tonnes of CO2 annually. Hanna Biro of NGO Bellona praised this step, highlighting it forces major climate contributors to bear more costs, easing taxpayer burden. The Net-Zero Industry Act (#NZIA), part of the Green Deal Industrial Plan, is a tool to achieve it. 👉🏼 The law will promote projects that incorporate products, components, and equipment needed for the production of various types of zero-emission technologies, from photovoltaic energy to batteries. However, they face challenges in ensuring the integrity and credibility of carbon credits. Recent observations have revealed discrepancies in the reliability of crediting methodologies, raising concerns about transparency and accountability in the market. The new Principles will effectively address these challenges while ensuring the high integrity of the Voluntary Carbon Market. These principles aim to establish robust standards for carbon credit supply and demand, improve market functioning, and ensure fair treatment of all participants.
