This #ChildrensMentalHealthWeek, we are pleased to be launching a new set of resources designed to help eating disorders professionals understand the challenges and opportunities of age-related service transitions. Developed in partnership with South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust, Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology & Neuroscience, NIHR Maudsley Biomedical Research Centre (BRC), clinicians, carers and young people, the resources include practical information on: ✋Understanding the risks and opportunities of age-related service transitions; ⚖️ Understanding the pros and cons of different service models in relation to such transitions; 🗒️Developing effective transition plans; 👪Involving parents and carers in transitions and navigating conversations around confidentiality; 🎓Helping young people plan for other age-related major transitions such as moving to university; 🤝Building strong working relationships between child and adult services. [Meet] Prof Leigh van den Heuvel, a Specialist Psychiatrist: Tygerberg Hospital; Associate Professor, Department of Psychiatry, Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences, Stellenbosch University. She is a finalist contending for the TW Kambule-NSTF Award: Emerging Researcher. Prof van den Heuvel is nominated for her outstanding contributions towards advancing knowledge in psychiatry and improving mental health outcomes of South Africans; in particular, her work evaluating the role that trauma and stress have on mental disorders and on the co-occurrence of mental disorders and other medical conditions, such as cardiovascular disease and HIV. This work extends to clinical trials that evaluate interventions aimed at addressing the adverse health consequences of stress. Of note are her studies evaluating whether mobile apps could improve burnout, mental health, and obesity in healthcare workers. If this is the first you're hearing about The Mysteries of Spontaneous Healing, it's a weekend Zoom workshop I'm teaching with my partner Jeffrey Rediger, MD, MDiv, author of CURED, Harvard medical school professor, and medical director at Harvard's psychiatry hospital McLean.
