As a member of the Champions of Change Coalition Property Group, our CEO James Patterson recently volunteered alongside Daniel Kernaghan from JLL to lead a group focused on shared carers’ responsibilities. Over the last few months, we've held focus groups with individuals with diverse, caring responsibilities across our industry to better understand the challenges of being a carer. We realised there can’t be a one-size-fits-all approach to these challenges given the diverse, caring responsibilities we see. And educating our people on what caring looks like is a priority. As a start, we’ve asked all firms to put together a statement demonstrating their commitment to improving the caring landscape in our industry. Here's ours: At Knight Frank Australia, we’re committed to changing the landscape of caring to enable our people to balance their professional and personal responsibilities. Our focus areas are: 1. Education: We aim to shift the culture and attitudes towards caring at Knight Frank and the broader property industry. We will define what caring means to us, increase our people’s awareness, and encourage open and meaningful conversations. 2. Focus on outcomes: We will prioritise outcomes over presenteeism, valuing our people based on their contributions and results, rather than the time spent at their desks. 3. We believe in working with people, not just for them by building on the strengths of the people and groups that make places great. Alongside The Flinders Ranges Council, three key ways we did things differently: 1 | Bringing together the depth of expertise within Council to establish an integrated working group rather than a consultant-led one. It allowed us to identify critical information, limit unnecessary information, simplify the documentation process, and develop a practical approach to on-the-ground work. 2 | Engaging openly and authentically with locals, visitors, and business owners to develop practical solutions that create meaningful impact. 3 | Developing strategies to incorporate local skills, capabilities and identifying opportunities for continuous skill development. Local government CEOs can be loosely split into 2 groups: The first consists of those simply filling a role as a cutting and thrusting cost reducer as they climb the corporate ladder. They are not out of place in the private sector. This group have little or no interest in local government or local democracy. Councillors are at best an occupational hazard who must be tolerated, but largely ignored. The second group is composed of individuals who GET local government, understanding the potential it has to transform the lives of citizens. In this group, these CEOs support and seek to enhance the role of the mayor and councillors as the legitimate voice of the community. In losing Barbara McKerrow, the local government sector is losing a leader firmly rooted in the latter category. A huge gap to fill.

The benefits that green space bring to cities and development go beyond increased wellbeing and access to nature to create a greater economic momentum. Quite simply; they support more desirable places. A new study by Trust for Public Land has found that cities that invest in parks and open spaces "attract a diverse workforce and, in turn, business, employment opportunities and visionary real estate development that contribute to improved quality-of-life in cities." We couldn't agree more. That's why we've put 6.5 acres of park at the heart of Mayfield. Investment in authentic, biodiverse green space is an investment in the quality of life of the people who will live, work and play here. And that benefit spreads beyond our own 24 acre boundary to more widely benefit #Manchester as a city. The study concludes with five key outcomes around public and private sectors working together, embracing different types of space to meet community needs, and promoting inclusivity – each of these strongly aligns with our own aims at Mayfield. I spent the last day of my 20s, onboarding at the City of Beaverton, learning to be an elected official. When I won, I was the youngest ever in our city’s history. On the last day of my 30s, I’m reflecting on the lessons I've learned during this decade as an elected official. Top 10 Lessons I Have Learned as an Elected Official: One for Every Year of My 30s: 1. Make a friend before you need a friend. This whole job is based on relationships. Don’t let your first call to someone be an ask. 2. Lift as you rise. Use your connections to uplift others. Running for office and being an elected official can be lonely. 3.Kindness is the currency of the realm. When all else fails, leading with kindness often gets you one step closer to solving a problem. 4. It truly takes all levels of government working together to accomplish big things. 5. There is no shortcut to relationship building. See number 1. 6. Be prepared to make hard decisions. It's evident when elected officials don’t do their homework. 7. No votes should be rare. If you must vote "no," make sure you have done everything possible to bring people to your side. 8. Compromise is not a dirty word. Voters sent you to office to make things happen; nothing will go 100% your way. 9.This is a job of service. Ensure you’re in the role that brings you the most joy and allows you to impact the things that matter most to you. Because when it gets hard, and it will, the job will fuel you. 10.Know the rules and get the votes. You won’t be effective if you never accomplish things.

As we mark National Community Planning Month, the Hilton Head Island Planning Department is reflecting on our unique community planning journey and the challenges we face in shaping our community's future. Our Island's rich history, diverse ecology, and evolving demographics present both opportunities and complexities in community planning. Harmony with Nature- From its inception, Hilton Head Island has been envisioned as a community that is built in concert with its natural surroundings. Our planning initiatives continue to uphold this principle, focusing on sustainable development that protects and enhances our unique coastal ecosystem. Honoring Our Roots- Hilton Head Island's planning efforts are deeply rooted in respect for the Gullah heritage. We strive to preserve and celebrate this vital part of our cultural tapestry. Adapting to Changing Demographics- As our Island increasingly becomes a retirement destination, we face new challenges in infrastructure, housing, and community services. Our planning efforts aim to balance these trends while maintaining the Island's character and quality of life for all residents. Looking Ahead- Currently, our planning team is focused on two major initiatives: District Planning: A comprehensive approach to create a collective community vision for the future of the Island that ensures a sustainable development pattern that respects community values, characteristics, and needs. Land Management Ordinance Overhaul: This project aims to update our development regulations to better address current, emerging, and future development challenges while preserving community character. This National Community Planning Month, we celebrate the hard work of our planners and the engaged citizens who contribute to shaping Hilton Head Island's future built environment.
